U.S. Envoy Applauds Canada for Terror Aid By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: March 25, 2004
NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S. Ambassador to Canada Paul Cellucci said Thursday that the United States greatly values Canadian help in securing the northern border against terrorism.
``We must be on guard,'' the ambassador about 60 members of the Canadian Society of New York. ``We cannot protect our homeland without Canada's help.''
He said the traditional warm ties between the two nations -- strained by Canada's refusal to back the war in Iraq -- have returned to ``excellent shape.''
Cellucci's assessment comes amid pledges by new Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin to strengthen ties with the United States, ruffled occasionally during Jean Chretien's decade as Canada's leader.
Cellucci also said the United States is hoping for Canadian participation in a missile-defense system.
Canadian officials have said Ottawa is willing to discuss with the United States the idea of a continental missile-defense system. But the Canadian government has also expressed reservations about the use of weapons in space.
In February, Martin outlined an agenda that included increased spending on defense and cross-border security.
Cellucci has urged Canada to increase its defense spending. Canada cut defense outlays by 25 percent during the 1990s while the number of military personnel dropped by a third.
Cellucci noted that Canada is the largest supplier of energy to the United States.
``There's no relationship we have in the world that's more important than our relationship with Canada,'' Cellucci said.

If Paul Cellucci managed to lay on all of this BS with a straight face, he missed his calling and should rightly have considered the theatre as a career.
Just what Canadian conservatives needed right about now - we've finally got the very socialist clique on the political ropes which has destroyed our military and habitually advanced socio-economic policies which have made Canada an international bad joke on the world's stage - and along comes the RINO U.S. Ambassador telling all they're doing a hell of a fine job.
Thanks a lot Paul !!!
Say, isn't that the train leaving for your old stomping grounds in Kerry-Kennedy land?

If Celluci was the Canadian Embassador to the US and wagged his finger in George Bush's face he'ld be stripped of his diplomatic credentials and put on the fastest plane out of Washington. He's just a Bush bag man who doesn't deserve to hold any embassadorship anywhere until he learns some basic table manners. He didn't have to say anything insulting just sending a hack like him to represent the US was insult enough. If he was a customer service rep for WalMart he wouldn't last an hour before being fired.
