Clarke refused to approve the request to let them fly out of the country and recommended to the FBI that they look at the names on the passenger manifests and that they approve it.

Boy, this dude Clarke seems to have been running the government for months before, during and after 9/11. Pretty good for a guy most of us never heard of until a few days ago.

Yet, but rather gently.

His answer is that he worked for the administration at that time and was following the party line.

He claims HE told the president not to come back to the White House; he claims that he is the one that ordered the shoot downs; now he ordered this?

I hear he even does windows.

What pretty did they offer you in exchange for this slander, Mr Clarke? A cabinet post? Twenty virgins? Disgusting weasel. And the press is up to their eyeballs complicit in all of this.

would you have to choose a democratic or Republican ballot to vote in the primary? If so, I wonder if he requested Republican to vote for McCain.

He is agreeing with the concept of PREEMPTION, i.e., the Bush Doctrine.

The RATs won't like that.

Actually, cynic that I am, I believe the book deal was a bribe by another name — a bribe to induce him to damage the Bush admin to coincide both with these hearing and the upcoming election. A disgruntled former employee with a huge ego is a perfect target for a bribe — er, a book deal.

Someone needs to check out whether Clarke's standard of living has improved significantly - just how much did he get in this book deal?

Roemer has been bought and paid for...or is he simply an idiot? Does anyone know why he's now longer in the government....dare I hope he got thrown out of office? Or chose not to run because he wanted to spend more time with his family. (isn't that what they usually say?)

OHmigawd!!! Clarke is defending Clinton on bombing the pharmaceutical laboratoryin Sudan!!! Claims it was a good target!!

Just cause he said it doesn't mean it is true. Do we (FReepers) know if the embargo was still in effect when the flight happened, or was it lifted. If it was lifted by that time, Krintinn may have to make another trip over to the Hart Bldg!! :-)

According to snopes.com, the Bin Laden family members did not leave the USA until regular flights were resumed. They did fly to a common collection point inside the USA during the ban.

I figured that is how he'd spin it.

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone on here that disagreed with you. :)

Now, if you went to DU and said Clarke is a megalomaniac, you might find everyone disagreeing with your assessment. :)

Thompson BLUDGEONED him with it, walked him thru it point by point

IMHO it started well but by the end of the questioning CLARK didn't get a glove laid on him. It will be protrayed that way in the MAJOR news media also, if it even gets a mention.

he basque terrorists never did multiple bombings

No, but more than one had been caught in the weeks before trying to smuggle explosives onto a train. So it wasn't much of a stretch for the people who had just dealt with that to think it might have been more of them.

Did he just refute his comment about Bush's war in Iraq underminding the war on terrorism?

Clarke just said that the U.S. shouldn't wait to determine who was responsible for a terrorist attack on us, that we should strike out at whomever we deemed as a threat?

Why didn't the Impeached President retaliate for the Cole attack??????? Everything was left to the Bush Admin to clean up after that impeached president.
