[history]
March 24, 2004 -- THE Bush ads are working: Two weeks ago, the Washington Post poll showed Sen. John Kerry ahead of President Bush by 11 points, and the Gallup Poll had him up by 8, while more recent polls reflect a dead heat between the two. Zogby (March 21) has Kerry up by only 48-46, and Rasmussen (March 20) has it Bush 46, Kerry 45.

You are right.
I don't trust dick morris.
He is a clintonite.
Like the Maffia, one nevers leaves the clinton crime cartel alive.
Ask Vince Foster and Jim Mc Dougal.
He is still alive.

I'd like to see a blowout, but...Gore won the popular vote. BUT.... Gore could claim eight years of unprecedented peace and prosperity (nothing to do with the Dems, of course, it was the conservative revolution that was completely responsible for it; the only good Clinton did was co-opting GOP ideas. But in politics, the presidency can claim credit).
The Dems never had such perfect historical timing to anoint a successor. And they still lost. It's indicative of the GOP's new strength that we could beat a candidate who could run on eight years of peace and prosperity.
The Dems have no such advantage this time, nor do they have a 19% Perot-spoiler either. They're running a gloomy Massachusetts liberal with serious flaws in a time when national security is in the forefront. And they are seemingly unable to quiet the obnoxious radical left, who will be prevalent throughout this campaign, and who threaten to disrupt both conventions.
I would not want to be Kerry's campaign manager.

His campaign has yet to find a theme song I have a suggestion:
MONEY
The best things in life are free
But you can give it to the birds and bees
I need money ( That's what I wannt )
That's what I want
That's what I want
(That's what I want)
Your lovin' gives me a special thrill
Won't buy me no cupid bill
I want money (That's what I want)
That's what I want
That's what I want
(That's what I want)
Money don't buy everything its true
What it don't buy I can't use
Just give me that money (That's what I want)
That's what I want
That's what I want
(That's what I want)
Give me some money
What I want right now
(That's what I want)
Just give me money
(That's what I want)
That's what I want right now
(That's what I want)
That's what I want
(That's what I want)
Give me the money
(That's what I want)
I want that real money
(That's what I want)
That's what I want

There was no way an untested John Kerry could have avoided this slump, and probably another one further down the road. But the man has the stuff to turn these gut-checks into drive.
However, I agree with Morris: each time he loses support, he will only gain back part. Bush will win.
To: kattracks
Still believe this race will be close. The Democrat Vote Fraud Machine will be in full effect. I believe Bush will win but it will be close.

I'm going to file this article of Morris' in my hardrive and bring it up in, say, late September. I have a feeling this article will prove to be an accurate description of how Campaign 2004 will pan out.I'd appreciate a ping if you repost it at that point. Thanks.

Morris was a clintonite up through about 1998. Previously, he worked for Lott and Helms. He is just good at what he does, but every column I have read over the past 4+ years have been decidely pro-conservative, laying out the case as to what it takes to win. If we ignore his advice, it is at our peril.

I'd bet money on a brokered convention, with Clinton & Clinton in the middle of the brokering. Not in a million years. The Democrats know, as you should, that a brokered convention would be a tacit admission of defeat. The Democrats would be viewed by swing voters as incompetent, and indecisive.
Those are two qualities they will NOT tolerate in this war on terrorism.
No, they're stuck with Kerry, even if he's losing 40 states.

I think Morris has some validity here. Nut Jobs like Sharpton and Kucinich and the leafy green backdrop of Hatred-Powered Howard made John Kerry look almost rational. He and Deadwards were adult candidates surrounded by toddlers on the pot.
Now Kerry has broken from his cover and concealment. Now the enemy troops are in the open, and like a well-drilled mortar platoon, Bush's campaign is firing Immediate Suppression.

I'll take that bet if you're serious. Nothing major, just, say, $10 payable via Paypal?

Kent, I want you to know I blame your post for the orange juice that I just got up my nose and all over my tie!
Hasn't been getting any since the Crimean War. No wonder she slow dances with Kim Il Jung! Here in Texas, we'd call that a dry gulch!

Typical finger-in-the-wind analysis by Morris. Every two weeks he changes his mind about who's going to win the election and by how much. Right now Bush has the momentum, so Morris says he's going to win. A couple weeks ago Kerry had the momentum and Bush was toast, according to Morris. Who needs an "expert" to make simplistic predictions based on nothing more than the current momentum? Yawn. I'd like to see him make a prediction and stick with it for once.

Dick has had a couple of prediction bomb in the past 4 years, such as Hillary not running and Arnold losing in a 3 person race. Why just 6 weeks ago Morris was crowing about how Bush was in trouble. But I wish this true.

I almost stopped reading at that point as well, because its an inept description of what happened in '94. The fact was that Klinton's first 2 years in office were politically atrocious. It was gays in the military, Jocelyn Elders and masturbation, raising your taxes when he campaigned on a middle class tax cut, unfulfilled welfare reform promises, and trying to socialize medicene.
However, I agree with Morris' point about how the dems front loaded the process and are now stuck with an untested, unvetted, norteastern liberal.

"Dick Morris wrote an article mere days ago (which should still be easy enough to locate, in the FR archives), all but writing off even the faintest, most remote possibility of a Bush victory"
I think you may be referring to the article that Morris noted that if Kerry makes the campaign about jobs, Bush will have a difficult time winning.
