O'Neill Received Secret Papers Through Error, Not Wrongdoing

WASHINGTON -- Sensitive national-security information was mistakenly released by the Treasury Department to former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill, but no criminal statutes were violated, records show.

Mr. O'Neill drew on some of the material -- part of a cache of 19,000 documents -- for a memoir released in January that was critical of President Bush. When a document stamped "Secret" was displayed on a CBS "60 Minutes" episode concerning the book, the Treasury Department sought an investigation.

My sense is that the fix was in to get O'Neill off. How ironic that his book was entitled "The Price of Loyalty" since he seems to be a major beneficiary of unreciprocated loyalty.

What difference does it make if the documents were not properly labeled as classified if O'Neill turned them over to Suskind without having ever viewed them? As a former cabinet secretary charged with protecting classified information from unauthorized parties, O'Neill's actions strike me as highly irresponsible, if not treasonous. Many of those documents undoubtedly related to Treasury Department plans to find and shut down terrorist bank accounts. If O'Neill hasn't already heard, THIS NATION IS AT WAR!

Is there not a video of him holding a Top Secret document up for view?

He just released CDs of government documents without at least doing the most cursory of reviews?

But Bush didn't specifically speak to him in person and have such conversation taped and documented as proof that he couldn't publish and make a buck off sensitive government material. It's Bush's fault!

``This plan went awry,'' the report said, after word about government action was leaked to Global Relief, apparently when a Times reporter called a charity spokesman to ask whether he knew about a plan by the U.S. government to freeze its assets.

[* My note: Is it possible reporter Philip Shenon's source for his leak of US plans to freeze Global Relief's assets was former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Niell? ]

The Sept. 11 report says that ``press leaks plagued'' most actions to freeze assets in the United States taken by the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control.

Teflon is the most famous non-stick material, but compared to slime and scum, it is almost adhesive.

O'Neil wasn't allowed to walk-he can't-slime can only be allowed to ooze.

Who was it that cleared the document release from treasury to O'Neill? Did that person ever resign?

Just tossing this in the ring:

1990s : (CLINTON & MARC RICH ACTION ON ALUMINUM INDUSTRY - RELATED TO ALCOA ALUMINUM & PAUL O'NEILL?) The only thing one really needs to know about O'Neill is during the 90s Clinton worked with Marc Rich to make aluminum available to ALCOA when ALCOA was on the ropes (like every other aluminum company). Clinton saved O'Neill's career, but expected payback. Sorta like Vito and the undertaker. I don't think O'Neill wanted to write the book, but was made an offer he couldn't refuse. 10 posted on 03/02/2004 10:36:06 AM PST by gov_bean_ counter

* Aluminum companies don't sell high tolerance aluminum tubing to wanna-be nuclear states like Iraq, Libya & N Korea for "rockets" , do they? =:-O

* Marc Rich / Glencore wouldn't take Iraqi oil vouchers as bribes, would he? =:-O

* Did ALCOA ever do business with Alamoudi?

1996 - 2000 : (PAUL O'NEILL SERVES ON HEINZ CENTER BOARD OF TRUSTEES WITH TEREEZA HEINZ-KERRY, WIFE OF MASSACHUSETTS SENATOR JOHN KERRY) [Paul] O'Neill served with Heinz Kerry on the Heinz Center Board of Trustees from 1996 through 2000, where the two shared a passion for environmental activism.

DECEMBER 2001 : (LEAK ABOUT FREEZING FINANCIAL ASSETS OF GRF BY REPORTER SPOILS SURVEILLANCE PLAN ON US TERROR CHARITY "GLOBAL RELIEF FOUNDATION" - WHICH THEN ALLEGEDLY DESTROYS EVIDENCE IN RESPONSE TO THE LEAK)

APRIL 16, 2002 : (DEARBORN, MI : LA SHISH RESTAURANT : HOMELAND SECURITY CHIEF TOM RIDGE & US TREASURY SEC PAUL O'NIELL MEET WITH DETROIT AREA MUSLIM LEADERS- ACCORDING TO LATER ARTICLE BY DEBBIE SCHLUSSEL) Remember Homeland Security Chief Tom Ridge’s color-coded warning system? He should have put himself on Red—a “severe risk” of attack—for his ludicrous meeting with Arab-American supporters of terrorism—and even a terrorist. It’s never expected for those who are supposed to protect us to break bread with those who endanger us. But on Tuesday, April 16, at Dearborn, Michigan’s “La Shish” Restaurant, Ridge and Treasury Secretary O’Neill "broke pita" with Imad Hamad, Ismael Ahmed, Ali Berry, Osama Siblani, Imam Hassan Qazwini, and several other Detroit area Muslim Arab leaders—all of whom applaud Arab terrorism. A scarier cast of characters would be hard to find...
......It’s bad enough that Ridge and O’Neill met with this cast of terrorist-lovers. But, they also made concessions to them, saying they’ll allow new donations to government-raided and -shuttered funders of terror, like Holy Land Foundation and Global Relief Foundation. With friends like these, who needs enemies? ----- "Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?," Debbie Schlussel , Townhall.com, April 26, 2002

[* Who or what is Debbie Schlussel's source for this meeting?]

DECEMBER 2002 : (TREASURY SEC PAUL O'NEILL IS FORCED TO RESIGN)Mr O'Neill was forced to resign as Treasury secretary in December 2002 after he declined to give full-hearted support for a new round of tax cuts, in a clear-out that also saw the dismissal of Larry Lindsey, the president's chief economic adviser. Unlike Mr Lindsey, who took his dismissal with public good grace, Mr O'Neill immediately stormed out of the Treasury to return to his home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
During his tenure as Treasury secretary, Mr O'Neill became well-known for speaking out frequently and frankly on a range of subjects including the dollar, the limited value of International Monetary Fund crisis lending and the problems with development aid. His comments frequently had an impact on financial markets, with one remark about the low likelihood of an IMF rescue package for Brazil causing a rapid fall in the Brazilian currency. The IMF subsequently announced a $30bn bail-out that succeeded in stabilising the Brazilian economy. ------"Bush savaged by former Treasury chief," by Alan Beattie, Financial Times, Jan 9, 2004

Wouldn't the FOIA request by Paul O'Neill in 2002 for his book give him an alibi for possessing the info - assuming his documents contained info on the assets seizure and 2001 raid just in case he were suspected of providing this info in 2001 to the reporter who then informed GRF in time for them to destroy evidence in Dec 2001?

OK, so I'm guessing.

OK, so I'm guessing.

LOL! Well, your guess on this one is better than mine. I need to review what you've got here to digest it. But regarding the article's title my first reaction is that even if there was no technically-legal "wrongdoing" that can be proven that doesn't necessarily imply it was done in "error".

Is anybody else getting just a bit tired of crap, after crap, after crap, after crap - with no punishment, no accountability of any kind?

Why do we put up with this stupid government, anyway, if it doesn't serve those it steals from, and flaunts the laws it imposes on us with impunity?

It's Bush's fault!

It's Bush's so-called "Justice" Dept. that allows scum like O'Neill, Sandy Berger and the whole Klinton Kadre to skate.

So yes, to a large extent, it is indeed Bush's fault.

And oh, he doesn't give a damn about restraining Big Stupid Government growth or guarding our borders, either.
