Minister dies watching Jesus movie From correspondents in Rio De Janeiro March 23, 2004

A BRAZILIAN pastor died of a sudden heart attack while watching Mel Gibson's controversial film "The Passion of The Christ," church officials said Monday.

Pastor Jose Geraldo Soares, 43, was watching the film, which has been criticized for its violent depiction of Jesus Christ's final hours, when he suffered a "violent heart attack" in a movie theater in Belo Horizonte, capital of the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, said Pastor Amauri Costa de Oliveira.

Soares did not respond when his wife turned to speak to him during the film. The couple was with their two children.

Soares was a member of the Eighth Presbyterian Church of Belo Horizonte, which reserved the entire movie theater so its 270 followers could watch the dramatization of Jesus' last 12 hours before his crucifixion.

The pastor's friends said his death was a coincidence and had nothing to do with the violent scenes showing Jesus being savagely beaten by Roman legionnaires.

The film was launched in Brazil on Friday.

It is the second death related to the film reported worldwide.

Peggy Law Scott, 57, fainted during the crucifixion scenes in a movie theater in Wichita, Kansas last month. She was taken to a hospital and later died from a heart attack.

Gibson's film has dominated the US box office, making 295.2 million dollars in the United States and Canada.

That's a good point.
I felt as though I had no choice but to see it.
God has a reason for that, I'm sure....:)
[if nothing else, to get my former Catholic/now agnostic hubby to thinking]

Hey, I'm 43 years old! If I could see without my glasses and if I could just get out of this darn chair I'd come show you how tough I can be. Hmmmpphh. Kids.

Haha! I'm 47. You misunderstood me. My point was that a 43 year old who dies of a heart attack had to have some serious blockage - more a physical thing rather than being shocked to death by movie violence. But I got a kick out of your response nonetheless.

Sorry, the eyes go first and then the brain. My knees left me sometime back in the 1900s.

Cass Elliot's death was initially misreported as having been caused by her choking on a sandwich. The true cause of death, a heart attack, was not determined until an autopsy was performed a week later. No food was found in her trachea.

Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but the poster did say she died WHILE eating a sandwich, not because of it. If they were looking for food in her trachea, is it not possible that she was eating when she had her heart attack?

Thank you.
I will try.
[but "my best" is often trumped by a fierce Irish temperament running up against a hot-headed Italian]...;))

Hey moron journalists - friends say the death was a coincidence, so why then do you claim the death is related to the film two sentences later?

re·lat·ed   Audio pronunciation of "related" ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (r-ltd)
adj.
  1. Being connected; associated.
  2. Connected by kinship, common origin, or marriage.
  3. Music. Having a close harmonic connection.
The death was associated with the movie because it happened in a movie theater where the film was playing, while it was being shown. The use of the word "related" in this context implies no causal relationship.

The guy was 43 years old for crying out loud. What looney believes he had a heart attack from watching violence in a movie? Looneys with an agenda, perhaps?

The article doesn't make that claim.

a troll is a person who posts messages that create controversy or an angry response without adding content to the discussion, often intentionally, merely as a ludibrium.

I don't know why you accuse Salve Regina of being a troll. She's made no provocative statements or said anything controversial. I took her comments as humor. Perhaps you need to have your funny bone checked.

Welcome to FR Regina!
