Former Vikings coach Grant visits Iraq troops [who blast Dan Rather, presstitutes]
Minneapolis Star Tribune ^ | 3/21/04 | Sid Hartman

Posted on 03/22/2004 1:15:55 PM PST by Caleb1411

Former Vikings coach Bud Grant, back from a week of visiting the troops in Iraq with a group of NFL alumni, said the soldiers have a different view about the situation there than what is being told here. Ex-Vikings linebacker Matt Blair also was a member of the group.

"They called it 'Meet and Greet' the troops," Grant said. "We weren't like politicians. We weren't with the generals."

Grant said the one thing the troops wanted to convey was the situation there is not like it is portrayed by the media in this country.

"They've got a job to do," Grant said. "They hate [CBS news anchor] Dan Rather because he only wants to talk about who got killed. And they're doing so much more than killing people or getting killed. They are supporting the countryside, they're helping them keep everything as peaceful as they can. They're opening schools and waterways and electrical outlets. They're doing things to help the country.". . .

"There's so much good that's going on, so many good things that they're out there every night patrolling, keeping the peace as much as they can, helping people get on their feet, establishing roads and communication," Grant said. "So much is good, and nobody wants to report that."

I'm suprised the old Red Star-Tribune let this one slip by unless the paper has changed since I left that leftist hellhole eight years ago.

The paper is still remorselessly leftist, but Sid's an icon. He's got the clout to get his stuff printed, even when it gives the rest of the Strib's ink-stained wretches a good case of the vapors.

Hate the Viqueens, but I always loved this guy.

A good read.

Yeah, I saw too damn many of his teams kick da Bears' asses over the years to not respect him.

He would be standing there on the sidelines steam billowing from the players in the cold looking as though he was standing in a sauna or on the beach meanwhile my damn feet were frozen solid.

See post #21. I think Sid (who's gotta be pushing 75) can call the shots; with his tenure and readership, he's a law unto himself.

Bud Grant is a true hero of mine.

I prayed for the day he would return to coach the Vikings.

Finally God gave us Mike Tice, and I am forever thankfull for his blessings.

I didn't see the Grow column (probably because I normally eschew the Strib in favor of the SPPP). Did you post it here, or do you have a link?

I've been a Dallas Cowboys fan for 48 years and I don't hate the Vikings as much as you do. You must be a Packers fan! That said, Bud Grant was a great coach in an era of great coaches. I've always admired him. I appreciate his telling the truth about our servicemen and women in Iraq, and its good to know they hate Rathernot as much as the rest of us.

And because they know how happy each soldier's death makes Dan....

Well Danny boy may not like it, this is true.

But, if he wants here's tonight's lead-off story.

...& it's already complete. {g}

Finally God gave us Mike Tice, and I am forever thankfull for his blessings.

I wish He would bless us with a guy with a brain in his head. But that's just me. Were it my team, Tice would have been gone after the disaster against the Cardinals.

Thanks for the ping. Joe Soucheray was just discussing this on his radio show.

I'm curious too about Doug Grow's column. What did he have to say?

I swore off the Red Star during x42's impeachment. I couldn't stomach their the support of the creep.
