XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX MON MARCH 22, 2004 12:04:25 ET XXXXX
NEWS FOR SALE: CBS PUSHED BOOK IT OWNS; '60 MINUTES' DID NOT REVEAL PARENT COMPANY'S FINANCIAL STAKE IN CLARKE PROJECT
CBSNEWS did not inform its viewers last night that its parent company owns and has a direct financial stake in the success of the book by former White House terror staffer turned Bush critic, Dick Clarke, the DRUDGE REPORT can reveal.
60 MINUTES aired a double-segment investigative report on the new book "Against All Enemies" -- but did not disclose how CBSNEWS parent VIACOM is publishing the book and will profit from any and all sales!
ETHICAL BREACH
CBS even used heavy promotion for the 60 MINUTES/book launch during its Sunday sports shows.
It is not clear who made the final decision at CBSNEWS not to inform the viewer during 60 MINUTES how they were watching a news story about a VIACOM product.
60 MINUTES pro Lesley Stahl is said to have been aware of the conflict before the program aired.
[CBSNEWS.COM did add a disclaimer to its Internet coverage of the book over the weekend: "Against All Enemies," which is being published Monday by FREE PRESS, a subsidiary of SIMON & SCHUSTER. Both CBSNews.com and SIMON & SCHUSTER are units of VIACOM." And CBS RADIO did carry a disclaimer in its news coverage of the book.]
SIMON & SCHUSTER INFO-COMMERCIAL
Earlier this year, it was Stahl who also profiled another author on 60 MINUTES -- for another book owned by VIACOMCBS -- without any disclaimer!
"The Price of Loyalty" by former Treasury Secretary, turned Bush critic, Paul O'Neill was financed, produced and released [and rolled-out at CBSNEWS] by VIACOM's SIMON & SCHUSTER.
Coming in future weeks, best-selling author Bob Woodward is set to release his PLAN OF ATTACK, a fresh look at the Bush White House.
Will the Woodward VIACOMSIMON&SCHUSTER product debut on: VIACOMSIMON&SCHUSTERCBS's 60 MINUTES?
[EDITOR'S NOTE: STAHL'S INTERVIEW WITH CLARKE ON '60 MINUTES' WAS THE TOP-RATED SHOW OF SUNDAY NIGHT WITH 11.9 RATING/19 SHARE.]

Yes, but as this story illustrates, every socialist is a capitalist when he wants to be. It's more like every socialist will lie, cheat, and steal in a capitalistic system. Furthermore, he will trade on his credibility to make a buck, especially at the expense of conservatives.

Why hasn't Drudge broken the Kerry assassination plot story?
To: Coop
I wrote 60 Minutes this morning and suggested they report last night's "news" story as a legal contribution to the Kerry campaign. Wouldn't want to see them get into any trouble... What if a whole bunch of people sent complaints to the FEC about illegal campaign contributions "in kind"?

Why hasn't Drudge broken the Kerry assassination plot story?I've got to believe he's a little gun'shy after the intern story blew up in his face. He's waiting for solid proof.

I agree that this is a clear conflict of interest but I think we all know that they didn't run this story to make money for the publisher---they ran the story to benefit John Kerry. They would have run the story even if it was published by a competitor and even if they knew they would lose money by running it.
To: NYC Republican
Could be. But the assassination plot story is much more highly sourced than the intern story. Kerry doesn't deny being at the meeting and many people have stated on the record that the plot was discussed during the meeting. CBS ran the Clarke story based solely on his word.

60 MINUTES pro Lesley Stahl Oxymoron.

You and I are on the same "wavelength" I think!!
I often turn on Fox when I get home after work when O'Reilly is on and stay with it for Hannity and the other guy who I really dislike even though I can't explain it...by then I am ready to eat so that's about it.
I have turned on the early morning (3-6am) when I get up early enough and they are company for me when I am making coffee, etc. They give me the overnight news as most of the middle east things happen when we are asleep.

Sigh. I tried, truly I did. Blather wan't on. Some guy in his place did come and say that Simon and Shuster and CBS were both owned by viacom. I didn't hear anymore as the phone rang then and I had to talk to my aunt.
Anybody else hear the rest?
To: imintrouble
I hang on Fox News as my news channel of choice. If a TV can have a "default setting", for me it would be Fox News. It's usually the last thing I turn off at night, so it's the first thing that pops up in the AM.
I'm listening to Greta now even as I type.

One hand washes the other at Viacom's CBS and Simon Schuster. If it were a critique of the Clinton Administration's documented policy missteps and foreign policy failures, does one really think CBS' Lesley Stahl would have been pitching softball questions at Richard Clarke? You can draw your own conclusions about the partisan media's eagerness to grasp at any straws that would put President Bush in a bad light.

Imus had booked Leslie Stahl on his show this a.m. to review Richard Clarke's "testimony" promoting his fictional diatribe called a book.
She backed out saying she had a "story to shoot". Laura Ingraham who is always fine with Imus in a pinch came on and remarked Stahl's excuse was weak and she was feeling the backlash of the two-part enabling interview.
GOOD.
They are all pretend journalists now and are so busy doing self promotion, they have lost their way in the news world...such as it is these days.
O'Reilly had a fine time with the story last night. Worth a watch that was.

I find Fox rarely pushes my buttons as some other newscasts do, and I like to cling to my comfort zone rather than add to the stress when news should be informative allowing me my own opinion to sort out rather than being fed party line or company line or whatever their corporate goals are.
Pandering newscasts are liable in my book.
Fox twinges me the least!
Have a great day!

Hi Babaloo - Best I can do because I missed a bit of the beginning of the program is give you the link to read from O'Reilly's page at Fox.
I especially enjoyed the White House Communications Director's rebuttal to the Clarke fantasy! lol
http://www.foxnews.com/oreilly/index.htm http://www.billoreilly.com/ There - you can pick out the stories from the index and format. Hope this helps.

Second the motion. I don't consider Drudge to be a conservative, but he is an honest man, which in these days of twisted news reporting is absolutely priceless.

How does it feel to be a journalistic prostitute, Leslie? It's pretty common knowledge that Leslie Stahl-in got her job on the casting couch. PravdABDNC doesn't have a credibility gap, they have a credibility canyon and most Americans see it.
