Spain Will Legalise Gay 'Marriages' - Zapatero

Thu Mar 18, 2004 04:04 PM ET

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain will legalize gay unions, although it may not call them marriages, incoming prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said on Thursday, but he did not set a time-frame for the move.

"We are going to present a bill to set gay unions on the same footing as marriage," he said in an interview on Spain's Telecinco television channel.

"From a semantic point of view marriage may be a concept that does not cover this type of union, but it will have the same legal effects," he added.

During the outgoing center-right government's two terms in office, opposition politicians in mainly Catholic Spain made several attempts to legalize same-sex marriage.

Zapatero, who swept to a surprise victory in general elections on Sunday, made legalizing gay unions one of his campaign pledges.

The Vatican condemns same sex unions.

I really feel for the conservative people in Spain. They are very much like the conservatives in America - we don't have much clout.

Zapatero, hurry up to beat Massachusetts to the punch.

In May, 2004, gay marriages will become the law of the land in Massachusetts per judicial edict.

In all seriousness, Hitlary negotiates with the social democrats of europe and now this.

Could it be the socialists are working overtime to emasculate the population? It seems the socialists are working overtime to destroy the family and now they see the homosexualizing of marriage as a means of destroying the family.

Look at the scandanavian experience. No family unit means the socialists can take over. As a power grab it seems prudent for the forces of evil.

I'm shocked, just shocked that Zapatero would be for gay marriage.

aren't Muslins against homosexuality?

In many Muslim sects, the father is supposed to de-virginize his son. It's a big rite of passage for a young Muslim boy and his proud father

And the stories in the Koran about the virgins talk about "72 virgin girls and virgin young boys" will be rewarded in their version of heaven.

Respectfully you are wrong. Conservative in the USA have MORE clout. We are now able to speak ideals openly where 10 years ago PC was imposed silence. Now the DESPERATION of the left has lead them into the courts BECAUSE of their lack of clout.

Al Queda attacked spain because they were viewed as WEAK and because of what happed 500 years ago.

Don't look only at spain, Earlier this month Greece elected a conservatvie government with a comfortable majority. Italy is also moving to the conservative.

You also have to look at the parlamentary nature of the governments and the representative fomulas they use.

Why is kerry so wacko? What was the democrat primary goal in a candidate? character? liberalism? answer:EEElectability. Not the words of those with clout. In fact, just the opposite. Demcrats are dying as a party and they know it.

I hope you're right (about the US).

As for Spain, I do feel bad for the 10 million Spaniards who voted for the conservatives. Life is not going to be fun for them.

Demcrats are dying as a party and they know it.

I feel that way about the Republican party, too. I'll vote for Bush, but I am almost insane over his open borders policy, as many conservatives are. We know he doesn't give a damn about us, or what we think. Therefore, I believe conservatives have no clout on the really important issues. But time will tell, I guess.

Yeah, what is the deal there? Is he trying to maintain a pool of cheap labor in the United States?

as an attorney I can tell you the policy is more window dressing for the regulations than actual change. There has been a rolling amnesty program for decades. From as far back to the 60's if you were in this country illegaly for six years you could apply for legalization. in the 90's (1996 I believe) that was upped to 10 years.

The only thing the program purports to do is expand some of the existing temp worker programs. These have been used for labor in the surgar cane industry and, believe it or not, hotel help in the poconos.

The real real real key to this shuffling of the immigration deck chairs is to use it as an excuse to impose real change to the US borders and entry points.

Already they have started keeping track of when people LEAVE as well as come into the country. That has always been an absurdity pre-9/11. Then of course there is the face recognition pictures and the thumb printing of all entrants.

as you said, time will tell.

Yeah, what is the deal there?

If I told you what I believe the deal really is, I'd be banned from FR. I'll say this, I believe the open borders policy is sinister, and has little to do with cheap labor.
