SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Four years of state budget cuts are putting the University of California in danger of losing ground as one of the nation's leading institutions, leaders of the nine-campus system warned Wednesday.
"We are on the edge," UC President Robert Dynes told the nine-campus system's governing Board of Regents as they began discussing how to absorb millions of dollars in cuts in the coming year.

Budget director Larry Hershman told regents that although the governor is proposing $370 million in budget cuts, the true impact of losing that money could come to more than $500 million. That's what we wanted to see , some budget cutting!

I'm an alumni of UCSC, and received a phone call a few weeks ago from a very nice young woman representing the Alumni Association. After some very pleasant chit-chat, she worked her way to her pitch for a donation. I flat-out told her that I will probably never give a dime.
"Why is that?" she asks.
"Well, for starters, the University was allowing the Million Mom March to hold secret, unadvertised meetings of a political nature on campus, which is illegal, plus the fact that the Academic Senate, with a minimal quorum, censured the President of the United States on the eve of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Then there's all the money I was forced to donate to CAL-PIRG through my tuition..."

Hopefully, they won't be calling me back again.

Not one word printed that illegal aliens are paying IN STATE tuition fees in Ca.
Each illegal alien pays about $10,000 less tuition than a U.S. citizen from, say Arizona will pay that wants attend California schools.
How may millions is the university system absorbing with this fraud?

Four years of state budget cuts are putting the University of California in danger of losing ground as one of the nation's leading institutions, They can whack the social sciences department and improve the reputation of the university.

http://www.calpirg.org/THE CALIFORNIA PUBLIC INTEREST RESEARCH GROUP
Their Mission
CALPIRG is an advocate for the public interest. When consumers are cheated, or the voices of ordinary citizens are drowned out by special interest lobbyists, CALPIRG speaks up and takes action. We uncover threats to public health and well-being and fight to end them, using the time-tested tools of investigative research, media exposés, grassroots organizing, advocacy and litigation. CALPIRG¹s mission is to deliver persistent, result-oriented public interest activism that encourages a fair, sustainable economy, and fosters responsive, democratic government.

My favorite is/was their graduate program in the "History of Conciousness".
It was actually a pretty good blend of philosophy, politics, and literature. Of course, all the grad programs at UCSC were simply a farm for teaching assistants.

See #15
Basically a bunch of wannabe Ralph Naders. Not a bad idea, but the implementation tends to lean way to the left.
In my day, they raised the tuition to cover a mandatory donation to CAL-PIRG. I think now you can opt out, but I'm not positive about that.

In my day, they raised the tuition to cover a mandatory donation to CAL-PIRG. I think now you can opt out, I think you're right. Didn't they in '78 have a court case ? which required an opt out and I marched into the Univeristy of Washington and opted out of WA-PIRG. Got my $2 bucks back...
