Rallies scheduled for, against war (FAYETTEVILLE, NC - March 20, 2004)

Two groups have been issued permits to hold counterdemonstrations Saturday when anti-war activists converge on Fayetteville for a peace rally to mark the first anniversary of the war in Iraq.

One of the groups, represented by Carolyn Culbreth and Rolling Thunder, a Fayetteville POW/MIA veterans organization, plans to hold a rally from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the top of the hill on Rowan Street, near the former Lions Club at Rowan Park. The permit estimates that up to 50 people will demonstrate.

Culbreth, a member of a committee developing Freedom Memorial Park, said she thinks the anti-war rally is disrespectful to soldiers and their families.

“The military wives are really upset,” she said. “I guess it’s like disheartening and a slap in the face.”

Culbreth also organized pro-troop rallies at the Market House last summer, across from where anti-war demonstrators protested. She questions their motives.

“It’s all hidden agenda,” she said. “They are just against the (Bush) administration and they are using our military in a disrespectful way to get their point across.”
