DAYTON, Tenn. -- The county that was the site of the Scopes "Monkey Trial" over the teaching of evolution is asking lawmakers to amend state law so the county can charge homosexuals with crimes against nature.
The Rhea County commissioners approved the request 8-0 Tuesday.
Commissioner J.C. Fugate, who introduced the measure, also asked the county attorney to find a way to enact an ordinance banning homosexuals from living in the county.
"We need to keep them out of here," Fugate said.
The vote was denounced by Matt Nevels, president of the Chattanooga chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
"That is the most farfetched idea put forth by any kind of public official," Nevels said. "I'm outraged."
Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Texas' sodomy laws as a violation of adults' privacy.
Rhea County is one of the most conservative counties in Tennessee. It holds an annual festival commemorating the 1925 trial at which John T. Scopes was convicted of teaching evolution. The verdict was thrown out on a technicality. The trial became the subject of the play and movie Inherit the Wind.
In 2002, a federal judge ruled unconstitutional the teaching of a Bible class in the public schools.

Aw, come on now. If they go and do that, what are those good ole fellas way up in the woods gonna do to satisfy their needs? Do they really want a bunch of guys who look like the villains from "Deliverance" coming down into town to look for satisfaction? Now do they?

No idea, but Nazi Germany tried banning Jews in the 1930s and 1940s. Maybe you could reference what the housing market did in Germany during that time era to get an idea.

The trial became the subject of the play and movie Inherit the Wind.Well, not quite. Inherit the Wind was a product of its author's imagination. Any resemblance to the actual Scopes trial is almost purely coincidental, to put it diplomatically.

Any houses for sale there? What I think is funny is that socialists tried to exterminate homosexuals because of their genetic impurity (often being closet homosexuals themselves). However -- that -- was when they had chance of conqeuring the world. Now they see homosexuality as an effective population control.

Do you plan to actually back up that hyperbole with some rational arguments, or do you prefer to just let it sit there and make an ass out of you?

Prices? Fairly low. It is a very rural county with little or no industry far from the city. About 2 1/2 hours ESE of Nashville and 1 hour NE of Chattanooga.

I am outraged that someone who can participate in such outrageous, perverted, twisted, unnatural, immoral and sick deviancy can belittle the word "outrage" by using it to support his abomination.

This can't be. Those hicks and hayseeds don't know what's good for themselves. They can't possibly determine their own fate. :) HA! (Sarcasm is fun)

I say put the fags back in the closet. For centuries that's the way it was done. More enlightened times, ya know.

asking lawmakers to amend state law so the county can charge homosexuals with crimes against nature. So far so good. Homosexual acts are intrinsically evil.
Commissioner J.C. Fugate, who introduced the measure, also asked the county attorney to find a way to enact an ordinance banning homosexuals from living in the county.
This is problematic. How would anyone know with any reasonable degree of certainty who is or isn't a "homosexual"? Regardless, should all sinners be prohibited from living in the county?
