It was mystifying. All of a sudden, the voice of Paul Anka was filling the air.
I went outside to see where the music was coming from. There in the next yard, fiddling with a loudspeaker hooked up to an old phonograph, was my neighbor Babble.
(You may recall that he used to be called Biffle, but he's had his name legally changed to avoid being confused with that race-car driver who's gotten to be famous.)
Pumped through the speaker and wafting through the neighborhood was the sound of Anka's "Having My Baby," the record where he sings over and over how wonderful it is that his wife, or whoever, is having his baby.
What is this, Babble, an oldies concert? I asked as I walked over.
"Sort of," he said. "I'm going to play this one next," he added, handing me an old 45-rpm record.
It was "Watching Scotty Grow," the old Bobby Goldsboro tune about how thrilled he is to watch his baby boy growing up.
"Then I think I'll try this one," he said. He held out Bobby Darin's recording of "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby." "Next I need to get these songs on tape, so I can blast them out of my car stereo."
So, why are you playing mushy 1960s records for the entire neighborhood? I demanded.
"It's the power of suggestion. If people listen to these songs about how cute and sweet and wonderful babies are, maybe they'll start thinking they'd like to hear the pitter-patter of little feet around the house, and they'll have bigger families."
And what makes you so interested in promoting fertility?
"Isn't it obvious?" he replied. "I'm trying to save Social Security."

Of course - especially if they're illegal alien babies (or amnestied babies) on welfare. They contribute a great deal to the economy by their consumption of socialist services.
It's too late -- most of the social-security (and other) taxes are paid by the 35-60 age group. Babies born now will only be 26 in 2030.

That's 34,201,800 total abortions during that time period. I don't know what the average person pays in taxes per year but a very low shot in the dark of $5000 would mean $171 Billion extra per year that could be used on SS though I am sure if the Government had it they would already be spending it on something else.
