The new Bush television commercial, which began running in the swing state of West Virginia on Tuesday, sought to discredit Mr. Kerry's defense credentials by attacking him for voting against the $87 billion bill last year that financed operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr. Kerry had voted for the resolution authorizing war in Iraq, but White House aides said he later expressed enough ambivalence about the war to let them portray him as opposing a war that enjoys wide support among Americans.

Mr. Kerry dismissed the advertisement. "I understand that the Republican attack machine has welcomed me to West Virginia today with another distortion and misleading statement," he said.

"I'm not going to worry about them misleading because we're going to just keep pounding away at the truth," Mr. Kerry told the crowd of veterans, who wore a rainbow of caps, jackets and pins representing all the military branches and recent conflicts. "We're going to build an army of truth-tellers."

Mr. Kerry added, "I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it," referring to an amendment he supported that would have rescinded some tax cuts to finance the war.

That's true. I'm not saying that different technical votes on a measure can't be different. If Kerry had explained what he really meant, this wouldn't be hurting him. Instead by sounding like he wanted to have it both ways on the final vote on the bill in question, he conveys the impression, deliberate or not, that he thinks the American people are that gullible enough to swallow anything. And this is rather extreme, even for someone with the flip-flop reputation Kerry's acquired.

I keep trying to think up a Kerry bingo game to exploit how he has every position on every issue covered. Bingo or Twister - he's got positions all over the board.

Mr. Kerry added, "I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it,"

Look Johnathan. I know what you did here. You switched your vote before the time expired so you could take both sides of the issue.

But you final vote is the only one that counts and you voted AGAINST funding are troops while they were in harms way. Just another part of your long legacy of undermining our men in uniform while they are at war.

We need a Dukakis in the tank button on FR so we can attach it to these threads. this one is gold, but I still think the foreign leaders statement is made of diamonds. Imagine being a reporter and sacrificing your career to protect a politician, then having the politician ignore your sacrifice.

The "Republican Attack Machine" (hi, everyone!) should pick this up and reaaaaaaly run with it. Quote Kerry and then imagine how differently history might have turned out if some of our earlier patriots had been wafflers like Kerry. Examples follow. Contributions welcome!

* "We have met the enemy and said 'hi, can we talk?'."
* "54-40-or-to-hell-with-it."
* "Ask not what your country can do for you, but on the other hand ask if it can do any more for you."
* "I regret that I have one life to give to my country but I haven't closed the door completely on this reincarnation thing."
* "Give me liberty or give me whatever's left."

Given that it's review time, I hope management hasn't learned this tactic.

I noticed that the crowd was fixed, the old men in the front rows were all clapping and nodding there heads like a bunch of bobble dolls, but when the camera breifly scanned the crowd, the younger men were sitting there slouching with their hands in their laps.

Typical demorat technique. Vote for a dem version of a bill that everyone knows will not pass, then vote against the bill that will pass.

Claim that you voted balh blah; as needed for the situation at hand. Lies.

Holden from Pa does this all the time.

Kerry is going to need a closet full of Botox before this campaign is over.

Forget the Botox he should go straight to the embalming fluid.

And just to think I had trouble with the first Pres. George Bush when he flipflopped on the abortion issue - just ONE issue. Kerry is flip-flopping all OVER the place. Does he stand for ANYthing?

I can tell even he doesn’t believe what he’s saying. When he’s giving his stump speech with his own personal brand of awkward gesticulation and then starts bellowing with a mean scowl about how bad everything is thanks to Bush, during the applause from the zombie-like crowd he’ll start laughing and point at someone in the crowd like he’s some kind of stand up comedian who’s laughing at his own jokes.
