Get Yer Ya-Yas Out [FR Moderating Gripe Thread]

Posted on 03/15/2004 11:01:45 AM PST by I Am Not A Mod

Edited on 03/15/2004 11:03:07 AM PST by Lead Moderator. [history]

LM here.

It's been a while since we had a thread along these lines.

I can tell from comments I am seeing in threads, on abuse reports, and in Freepmail that some people are unhappy with various policies and their implementations by the staff here.

I've seen allegations that certain factions are picked on. I've seen allegations that the moderators have killed activism. I've heard rumors that we killed Kenny, and even that we killed the radio star. I see certain personality conflicts acting up, and know that one (or both) sides in it feel that we aren't doing what we should.

So let's open this can of worms.

This thread is for making your grievances heard. If you think something stinks or is wrong, make your case here. Back it up with facts. Let the audience at large weigh in on your evidence.

I'll read the thread. Jim will too in all likelihood. So will the other moderators. Depending upon how well you make your point, and depending on if you can convince Jim, me, the other moderators, and/or the world, maybe you can change things. And if you don't, then it might make you feel better to have vented, so it won't make this thread a total loss.

I'm not going to reply to this thread for quite a while. Rather, I am going to sit back and watch to try and get a feel for the general tenor. I encourage those who are both happy and unhappy with things to particpate in this thread.

Let's rock.

As it is, once you've searched for an article title you have to page back to post the new article.

Hey DG..... is your computer screen limited in the number of windows you can have open. When posting I open a new window for the post and set it up there and keep my other windows functioning like I normally have them set up. The search can be preformed with the latest post page window just prior to hitting post in the posting window...

Pull, suspend, ban, etc, will often depend on the severity of the abuse and or whether the poster involved is a repeat offender, etc.

Does that apply to everyone here across the board? And yes, I am quite serious.

SEEMS TO ME, JOHN R would do well to set up the posting function to screen out more than X lines from the prohibited sources. I don't want to see Jim and FR hassled or at risk from ignorant or thoughtless posts from prohibited sources.

It should not be left to volunteer modes and abuse buttons. Make the software prevent hazards. Of course, people would need to insure that the sources were accurately credited so the screening would be accurate.

That would be John's area, code changes. If you ask, we'll try to give an answer. Sometimes we don't based on confidentiality and such, but, we'll pretty much tell you that. Best answer I can give you is, if you see something and you want an answer, just ask us via mail.

In other words, it's not across the board. Then don't pretend otherwise.

What is this? FreeRepublic's internet version of "Survivor"? You're voting someone off the island? If that's the case, I'd like to vote off a couple of people and invite a few back.

Do you use multiple browser windows? What your are suggesting is already available if you do

Hmmm, I hadn't thought of doing it that way, although it would be faster than how I'm currently doing it. Still, it's logical to have a link to posting on the page JimRob wants us to check before we post.

I'm not really griping. The changes to this forum since I first started lurking are incredible. I'm very happy with things right now.

More on topic, I think the Mods are doing a fine job. I can't see every thread, of course, but I've never seen a banning that wasn't richly earned, and suspensions have seemed to mellow most offenders who just need some time to cool off. Even some long-time posters who finally wore out their welcome have been allowed to return, although my impression is that it hasn't worked out. They get themselves banned again before too long.

My only other suggestion involves FR and work hours. Ideally, there would be a preference button I could click so that if I spent more than 15 minutes or so during the day (other than at lunch) at FR, a mild shock would be delivered throught the keyboard. Any plans for that?

I thought the query was

HOW CAN WE BE NOTIFIED to move before our thread inadvertently causes problems.

ANS: MOVE ON OR BEFORE 5,000 POSTS.

REPLY: AWWWWWW BUT WE DON'T WANNA, IT'S TOOOOO SMALL . . .

Sorry, but I thought Hobbits were more together than such a sequence would imply.

I'm fairly new here and sometimes have difficulty "searching". I was trying to find a picture a couple of months ago of Kerry's son who was leaning out the window of a bus. The picture was posted on FreeRepublic the day before, and I tried every way I could to find it, but never did. I couldn't remember the exact headline of the thread where it was located, but even trying a few of the words I did remember I still was unable to bring it up. Guess there's always the possibility of it just being pulled, but thought it'd stay around longer than 24 hours. Just curious what I may have done wrong.

Thanks,
Mupcat

Hobbits are just fat, lazy stay-at-homes. Adventures and new Holes are not for them.

But we promises be good. We swears on the Precious....
