Get Yer Ya-Yas Out [FR Moderating Gripe Thread]

Posted on 03/15/2004 11:01:45 AM PST by I Am Not A Mod

Edited on 03/15/2004 11:03:07 AM PST by Lead Moderator. [history]

LM here.

It's been a while since we had a thread along these lines.

I can tell from comments I am seeing in threads, on abuse reports, and in Freepmail that some people are unhappy with various policies and their implementations by the staff here.

I've seen allegations that certain factions are picked on. I've seen allegations that the moderators have killed activism. I've heard rumors that we killed Kenny, and even that we killed the radio star. I see certain personality conflicts acting up, and know that one (or both) sides in it feel that we aren't doing what we should.

So let's open this can of worms.

This thread is for making your grievances heard. If you think something stinks or is wrong, make your case here. Back it up with facts. Let the audience at large weigh in on your evidence.

I'll read the thread. Jim will too in all likelihood. So will the other moderators. Depending upon how well you make your point, and depending on if you can convince Jim, me, the other moderators, and/or the world, maybe you can change things. And if you don't, then it might make you feel better to have vented, so it won't make this thread a total loss.

I'm not going to reply to this thread for quite a while. Rather, I am going to sit back and watch to try and get a feel for the general tenor. I encourage those who are both happy and unhappy with things to particpate in this thread.

Let's rock.

Click here and you will have the vanity (AKA Your Opinions/Questions) topic as a sidebar.

And how do we do this for other "forums"? I've been looking for a way to subscribe to the religion forum, for example, and cannot find it anywhere.

But celebrating and reveling over someone being crushed by a bulldozer speaks volumes about us, does it not?

That definitely is very sick and very sad. It does not behoove us as conservatives...

1. "thesummerwind" has been banned from posting. As far as I can tell, it's because he posted some stuff that sounded anti-semitic. He said he didn't mean what it sounded like.

Yeah, like how come it's okay to post anti-Christian comments, anti-Catholic comments (I'm not Catholic), and other anti-religion comments, but you get anywhere close to something that could possibly be considered anti-Semetic, it's gone or you are.

The Passion threads were a classic case of this double standard and I could not figure it out, unless it's because it's just PC to act that way.

Don't get me wrong. I would never post anything anti-Semetic, and I condemn anti-Semetism in the strongest possible way. I just didn't get the baiting and anti-Christian bashing allowed to run unchecked by a very few Jews, when I knew I couldn't get away with saying something similar about Jews or their religion.

I did not say at all whether I agreed or disagreed with her. But celebrating and reveling over someone being crushed by a bulldozer speaks volumes about us, does it not?

I don't see a problem in celebrating the death of an enemy combatant in the War on Terrorism.

Now that you bring it up, I have tried to avoid any and all "Passion" threads because of what I perceive to be extreme anti-semitism, rage, and hatred. The venom with which people have attacked anyone who dared to say they didn't like the Passion or thought it was anti-semitic was disturbing to me. I see what I consider anti-semitic comments frequently, mostly from people I think are just ignorant or don't realize how stereotypically anti-semitic their comments are. However, I haven't requested that anyone be banned.

If I had to kill, even in self defense, I would forever have a certain degree of respect for the person, and a sadness that it happened.

If war is something you chose to celebrate, that's your opinion, but war is still something we should try to avoid.

There are better goals for man than war just for war's sake.

I know THAT maybe sometimes you might think that I might not have said everything I WOULD probably want to say totally and if you THINK that I am sorry. I just really hate SCREAMING and upset a lot. Mostly, anyway.

Sometimes you remind me of someone I used to know.

Me too but I didn't kill Corrie. Since I didn't I can celebrate as I would the death of Abu Abbas (or whatever his name was). Those tunnels she was guarding were being used to kill Israelis.

If war is something you chose to celebrate, that's your opinion, but war is still something we should try to avoid.

War is a necessary part of this life and there will be evil with us till the end. We should celebrate our victories because we know with victories we save the lives of innocents.

There are better goals for man than war just for war's sake.

It's not for war's sake, it's for the sake of students , children, women and men that we see killed almost every week by these people using Corrie's tunnels.

From FR's Posting Guidelines:

Don't jump threads - If you get involved in an argument in one thread, it's considered poor manners to restart the previous argument in the middle of an unrelated thread.

Does this rule still apply?

If so, why is it not enforced?

Because it wasn't enforced in the instance I linked to, does that mean that I can also post excerpts from the same pulled thread, without fear of:

a) having my comments pulled,

b) the thread I post them on being pulled, and/or

c)being banned for breaking the posting rule that was not enforced in the instance I linked to?

Another question...
...as the comments (that broke the posting guidelines) on the thread I linked to were cross-posted from a now-nuked thread, why not put the now-nuked thread back up in its entirety on FR - so that FReepers can see, and judge for themselves, the vanity thread that I posted, and the comments - in context - that were crossposted (breaking the FR posting guidelines) by the two offending posters?

I'm perfectly willing to take the heat for every word I typed in that now-nuked thread. I do not regret one word of my comments there.

I do find it incredibly unfair that only selected comments have been allowed to stand as some sort of judgement against me, and by extension, used as a condemnation of the DC Chapter.

By the way... what made that (now-nuked) thread too hot for even the smoky back room?

I await your answers.

Since this is about the mods and not Corrie, do you think the mods should do something about expressed giddiness over the fact she threw herself under an Israeli bulldozer?

Do you get the Darwin awards email?

Do you fret over that also?

Also, is there any way that mhking's "Just Damn" threads could somehow get a "button" of their own on the home page? It's way too high-volume for me to be on the PING list, but it'd be great to have one simple place to go to to read the threads dedicated to the amazing, bizarre, and stupefyingly dumb.

Why not revel? Should I not celebrate my existence? Should I not celebrate Good over Evil?

You spoke of a certain "respect", a certain sadness for enemies.

I respect warriors, but have no respect, and never will, for Collaborators and Traitors.

There is a difference.

1. What is the best way to Make Friends and Influence People?

You must insult them and tell them they are lazy, and show them how superior you are.

Everyone knows that. ;-)

They're "Guidelines" not "Rules." I'm not a cop. I don't want a lot of rules that MUST be enforced. I don't like racism, or profanity or personal insults/attacks, etc., but it's subjective. Pull, suspend, ban, etc, will often depend on the severity of the abuse and or whether the poster involved is a repeat offender, etc. I pulled the thread in question and it will remain pulled. I don't like people ragging on the forum and or the FReepers and you seem to be doing that a lot lately. A whole lot.
