Poll: Americans like Brits better than Canadians

The best-friend relationship that Canada and the U.S. once enjoyed might have become more of a one-way affair. While 50% of Canadians said the U.S. was our "best friend," only 20% of American respondents in the Leger Marketing poll felt likewise about their northern neighbour.

Britain, which has forged even closer political ties with the U.S. in recent years, topped the best-friend list for 62% of Americans.

Only 25% of Canadians chose Britain as their country's best buddy.

The poll also suggested that 68% of Canadians thought the two countries were very different, while 29% believed they were very much alike.

Among Americans, the numbers were reversed -- 61% said the countries were very much alike, compared with 31% who said they were very different.

All joking aside, in my opinion, if this poll reflects Canadians in general, then this tells me most Canadians want better relations with America. Maybe Canadians in general aren't the frothing lefty anti-American pro-Frog socialists that many in their liberal media and government want them to be.

If that's true then if they want to demonstrate this, a great start would be to give the ruling Liberal party a nice thrashing in the upcoming election and put the Conservatives in power.

The problem in Canada with the conservatives is that their party is fractured. There are 3 major conservative parties that cannot seem to unite so they constantly lose parliamentary elections.

Actually, that's not true any more. The conservative parties united into one last fall.

Canadians can be incredibly condescending toward those of us from the Lower 48--for no reason. Heck, their military is so broke they cannot even afford ammunition. Barney Fife is their commanding officer.

"Americans like Brits better than Canadians"

Depends on how they're prepared.

This is no surprise.  If Canada ever felt threatened, we'd be there to help, no questions asked.  But when it was their turn to return the favor, we saw what they were really made of.  Just because we share a border with them doesn't assure them of a special place in our hearts.

Alas, with comments like Francoise Ducros calling Bush a moron, and the hideous beast Carolyn Parrish's comment of "Damn Americans. Hate those bastards", I'm not surprised.

It's the best news from Canada in a decade. The arrogant Liberal dictatorship now has a viable challenger and they're in striking distance in the polls. The liberal Canadian media is already doing their best to disparage this new party - that tells me they're scared.

As far as this poll goes, I'm not surprised one bit. The British government was a friend to America. A Canadian government MP said "Damn Americans, I hate those bastards" and the former Canadian PM took potshots at Bush along with his buddy Chirac. You do the math.

Canadian freepers are telling me that the liberal party is facing big losses in comming elections.

I have been hearing that in the Non-Freeper World as well. One can hope.

Personally, for myself, the biggest damage was from people like the Mad Cow of the North making _public_ pronouncements of "Americans-I hate those Bastards".

I will be gleeful to see the end of that one. Such public trumpeting is not "Statesmanship", and does have consequences.

The British government was a friend to America.
I meant to add - the funny thing is, the British PM is ideologically dissimilar from Bush, and yet was still a friend to America. The ex Canadian PM and his government is also ideologically dissimilar but was certainly not a friend. There's a big difference.

Canadian liberals can do what they want, knowing if they get into real trouble, the U.S. will bail them out no matter what.

The buck stops here, and nowhere else.

Many folks in the US "grew up" post 9/11.

Many of the folks in Europe and Canada are still stuck in the "I hate the adults who are in charge " mode of the the 60's.

Kerry is stuck in that mode, too.

who do you reckon the Brits would pick for their "best friends"?

The best things about Martin is he's not Chretien and he's not an arrogant Frog. He's a pragmatic liberal, but with that said he needs to go along with the rest of the dictatorship. With the seeming loss of Spain as an ally to America, hopefully Canada can come on side soon.
