Yea, I thought that was a ballsy choice of venue. Hope he throws it in the Rats face. He needs to start swinging. Anyhow, I feel better today about it.

I believe the Socialists promised to withdraw Spain's troops from Iraq, didn't they? I wonder how soon that will happen. Sooner the better. Best to keep pressure on the Socialist party, and deny them any credit for progress beyond the date they withdraw.

Well, damn. Just damn. They wimped out and let the terrorists win. All those who died the other day, died for nothing. Wonderful to know the terrorists have enough power to change governments. Spain might as well drop drawers and bend over.
To: GiveEmDubya
I think they will realize it. But I'm not sure they have any options to deal with it. I don't recall whether Spain's system permits votes of no confidence, etc.
Of course, the option of all of them will be to come running to us. And then again, maybe some of them will actually stand up and fight (after the first few bombings).

The new Spanish Prime Minister to be is a very good friend of our little dictator the South East, Fidel Castro.

The consevatives are not doing very well there. Do not be surprised if they do swing left soon.
To: claudiustg
June? Probably. Unless they can get them out sooner.
I am so disgusted with my friends in Spain that I can hardly type. It wasn't a surprise, but I just kept hoping somehow it wouldn't happen.

"The 'best' thing could happen now is an AQ tape to gloat about its victory in the polls today."
Your exactly right. If Al Queda publicly declares victory it might just register with many Spanish people that they have just collectively succeeded in delivering a huge win to Islamic terrorists. It also may shame enough of them to pressure the new Socialist government to not change the policies the outgoing goverment had been pursuing.
I must say though, while I hope the above happens, I honestly think it is more likely that the Spanish people will just continue to cower in the face of Muslim extremism.
"Today is one of those days will mark a turn in history, and this time around, we have the Spainards playing the role of Neville Chamberlain."
Agreed, though it was sadly very predictable. The Spanish ppopulation grudging went along with fighting the terror war alongside the United States so long as they didn't get their nose bloodied. One good punch and they essentially surrendered.
"I don't think the brits will kowtow to the AQ"
Close call, though I suspect that a terrorist attack in Britain will result, at least in the short term, in the same reflexive anti-American kneejerk reaction. A majority of the population in pretty much every single European country opposed invading Iraq. The European media, since the fall of Saddam's regime, have been relentless in brainwashing the masses that it was a major blunder. If an Islamic terrorists bomb goes off in downtown London, the media and leftist will do the same as the Spanish socialist - that is blame America and claim the entire thing is a result of going into Iraq and taking out Saddam.
"So there are pockets of hope in the sea of despair."
I forsee lots of despair in the short term, but the West will eventually prevail. The US and Europe will have to be hit many more times, probably with biological and nuclear weapons before the spoiled, lazy, ignorant masses finally realize that they really have to fight a real war against Islamists. When that day finally occurs, Islam will face a war far beyond the little pinpricks it is dealing with now.
Longbow
I went to the BBC's Talking Point section. Already they're gloating over how they've "chosen peace". Fricken' morons....This is what I sent, although I know they'll never post it-uncensored, at least:
Muslem terrorists do not maim and kill because of Iraq, or Israel, or any of the other "rational" geopolitical motives eurowimps trot out : They do so because their "holy" book COMMANDS them not to stop until the entire world is muslem, or at least, under muslem domination. The victory of the socialist party in Spain today will embolden the terrorists : They will interpret it as proof that Europeans are willing to submit to dhimmitude . Already, immigrant communities in various EU countries have demanded self rule and exemption from their host countries laws, including the right to inflict torture, mutilation, and death. They now know that a few bombs will make their hosts capitulate. And as soon as the European hosts countries grant self rule, they will demand more. Look at what's happening in Nigeria for your futures-sharia inflicted even upon nonmuslems, nonmuslems killed, forcibly converted.... The children of today's Europeans will be human livestock.

It has begun. FNC reporting "a wave of attacks" in the near future. A bomb was just discovered outside Citibank in Greece.
To: livius
Of course, the option of all of them will be to come running to us. Without a doubt. But I wonder what we'd do in that case--I doubt we'd drop everything and run to the aid of certain countries that told us to stuff it when we were running the WOT.

Source? Link? Quote?Fox News, CNN, ABC, and BBC to name a few of the networks covering his speech that evening. It was translated from Spanish but he was clearly laying the blame of the Basques.
Well, that's a source, but it's not a link and a quote.
I have not yet seen any Aznar quote confidently prclaiming that it was a Basque attack.
To: claudiustg
Wait a minute. If al Qaeda can influence the Spanish by putting a gun to their heads, there is nothing to suggest that we can't gain even more influence by putting an even bigger gun to their heads.
Time to polish those nukes, boys. We could turn the tables and get the world dancing to our tune for a change!
To: livius
So this is the new Prime Minister of Spain? He looks a tad bit unhinged.

Greece has not been an ally in this war on terrorism but it looks like they are going to be the next victim of the terrorists. I am now willing to predict that the US will not be able to participate in the Olympics this year. There will most likely be no Olympics this year.

Looks like the Spanish people have chosen appeasement. They've not only chosen appeasement, they've strengthened the hand of the Left all across Europe. The result of the Spanish election frightens me more than any terrorist attack could ever do. Terrorists now know they can sway the outcome of elections. Who knows what they'll do to try to help get Kerry elected. Shudder...
