I think we really need to consider not only what this does for the terrorist mindset in general (re: strategy), but I think it's important to learn whether or not the orders for this attack came from the top, or if this is a "self-directed" faction of al Qaeda which acted on its own.
If this was a compartmentalized operation, this bodes even worse for the future. Not only does AQ in general acquire a blueprint to overthrow Christian capitalist Europe, but these internal factions will be emboldened to emulate their bretheren, regardless of AQ leadership, now that they've seen a massive attack can be consummated.
There's the rub. It's an important question to be answered. I would feel 'better' knowing it came from the top, and not some rogue group forwarding their agenda as they see fit...
