Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread 5
CNN ^ | March 12, 2004

Posted on 03/12/2004 8:23:06 PM PST by thecabal

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This week's deadly train bombings in Spain will not lead to a rise in the U.S. color-coded terror threat alert system, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman said Friday.

"Based on the current intelligence, we have no specific indicators that terrorist groups are considering such an attack in the U.S. in the near term," said department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse.

"2,400 nanograms per square meter per hour"

Just out of curiosity, I wonder what is the lat/long of Yellowstone...specifically the Mammoth/Norris Basins?

Maybe we need a listing of lat/long of all the *interesting* spots in the US.

Check out the marxist-leninist/communist propaganda techniques at work in that post! Although no one comes out and admits it, there seems to be a growing nexus of communist-jihadist communication, as evidenced in the level of sophistication they are gaining in their jihad communications.

This is a disturbing trend.

"While looking for news on the missing gasoline tanker I found this..."

This reminds me of another story out of Arizona where the owner of a gas station had reported that the gasoline was stolen from the underground tanks. Only a tanker would be able to do that. I'd look for the story but I highly doubt I'll find it; it was months ago and only received a tiny paragraph buried at the bottom of the page.

Heavenly Father, we return to give You thanks that our President's commitment to defend the American people has not been diminished by any one word spoken by any one person, no matter who or where. Sustain him beyond measure, O God, for there are those who would take the reins of our government and lead us to appeasement. Let not the people be deceived ... bring forth the word of truth. Hold to account those in the media who present agendas and not facts ... give greater voice to those who present facts and not agendas. Stir us to be a righteous people, looking to You for guidance, seeking You for protection, and serving You in love and obedience. Stay the hand of all those who would do us harm, such is Your mighty power. May it be thus, O God, in the Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen ...

WB8HRO/TIM's Quick and Easy Method to Get Your No Code Technicians License

A Brief Introduction to Amateur Radio

WB8HRO/TIM's Quick and Easy Method to Get Your No Code Technicians License

There are numerous study methods that work this is just one of them.  Of course I think it is the best, fastest and easiest.

My wife got her Tech License after 2 weeks of study, but she is very smart and knows how to study.  I will share her study "secrets" with you.  It is not necessary to perfectly understand all the material, just to pass the test.  When you get your Tech License and get on the air there will be lots of help and the theory will come together.  There is no Morse code (CW) requirement for a Tech License.

Now for the how to:

1.  Go to a Radio Shack or online (http://www.w5yi.org/Technic.htm)  and get a copy of the Gordon West, WB6NOA Technician Study Guide.  You don't have to bother with the video tapes or software at the Tech License level.

2.  The big secret: read the questions and highlight the correct answer.  Read any explanation at the end of the list of answers for that question.  DO NOT read the wrong answers at this time or you'll just be "teaching" yourself the wrong answers.

3.  After you have highlighted all the correct answers go through again and read the question, then the correct highlighted answer and any explanation at the end of the list of answers for that question.

4.  Go online at http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl and take the practice tests.

5.  When you are getting 80 to 85 % correct constantly on several practice tests go to http://www.arrl.org/arrlvec/examsearch.phtml and find a test session in your area.  If there is a contact person's telephone number call him and let him know you're coming even if it says pre-registration is unnecessary.

6.  In a week + or - after you pass your test, your callsign will be issued, go to http://wtbwww05.fcc.gov/default.sph/UlsQueryApp.exe?FNC=query_type__Ahome_html click continue then in the Licensee Name: field type your last name followed by a coma and a space your first name followed by a space and your middle name initial with no other punctuation or spaces.  For example: CONROY, TIMOTHY D
As soon as your call sign appears you may transmit.  You do not have to wait for your paper license to come by US mail.

7.  Buy a 2 meter radio or a radio with 2 meter capability.  Buy a 2 meter antenna.  The only brands I buy are Icom, Alinco or ADI.  I usually get the best deals at HRO http://www.hamradio.com/ their customer service is great and they will usually match anyone's prices.  I never buy used radios and never factory referbs (too many horror stories) because for the prices they want used I pay a little more and get a warrantee.

If it seem highly likely that you will get your Tech License do step 7 as soon as you can.  Unless you already have a way of listening on 2 meters. You can program your 2 meter radio to scan several frequencies and listen in and get familiar with procedures on repeaters. The following links will allow you to find repeaters in the Southeastern Michigan area:

http://www.w8hvg.org/

http://www.qsl.net/miarc/repeater_directory.html

When you get on the air don't worry about doing or saying something wrong.  I have made every mistake there is to make and everyone else makes mistakes.  So what, the only person who doesn't make mistakes is the person who never (says) does anything.  After you study for and pass your Tech exam you will know enough to stay legal.  If someone ever angrily chews you out on the air for making a mistake (I haven't heard this sort of thing in years) apologize and realize that their mistake was far greater than yours and they don't even know it.  Don't even think about trying to point out their mistake on the air.  Just carry on wiser but undaunted.

By the way, you will hear a lot of hams saying 73's, this is CB talk (most of us started on CB).  73 means best regards it is already plural and on CW I have no idea how to send an apostrophe.

Very 73, Tim - WB8HRO

I did not mean to frighten you, Granny. Yesterday we were awaiting another bridge or overpass to be closed, confirming your hypothesis that escape from New York is being blocked. Several small actions, if well-coordinated, could amount to a really big deal. Disguising their operations as mere accidents would be a new tactic for our enemies.

I recall something about too many people learning the trick and the phone companies finally found out about it, and then shut it down. He went to jail for a while.

There was an engineering student at MIT who could whistle a perfect pitch. Other students would pay him to make free phone calls for him. What he did was to dial 555-1212 in a given area code and then whistle in the number he wanted to reach. After lots of kids were lined up by the dormitory phone to get free phone calls the student got busted. This was around the time of the 'blue boxes' and the 'red boxes'.

"Nothing came of the phone, but this makes one wonder where it came from? How could it just be there on that flight with no owner? It would have to have been left from a previous flight. Sooooo, long story short, if a phone can be left, what else?"

Ever since my son developed diabetes, I've wondered what else someone can get on the plane. I have no problem getting around nor getting into any building and in the past 2-1/2 years, only one security guard asked about a pair of scissors that are kept in his supply bag. Now, his bag isn't one of the normal diabetes supply bags, it looks like a little doctor's bag and he keeps all his needles, scissors to cut open a tube of glucose should he need to, lancets and insulin vials. While the insulin needs to be in it's original prescription box, with the numbers of people suffering from diabetes, it can't be all that hard to get ahold of prescription boxes and insulin vials. Who's to say it's actually insulin? Far-fetched, I know, but this is what happens when you're running low on sleep...

That is interesting, no one has brought that up yet as far as I know. That insulin vial could be filled with something to knock out the flight crew (in the cabin) and/or the marshal's if on board. (hopefully those cockpit doors are now closed and locked) Or, worst case scenario some other kind of bio.....don't want to think about that but it is possible if they have it.

Now, what is the solution? What would they do for the people with diabetes who need their supplies? This type of medication would have to be brought on board.

Yes I definitely remember that stolen gasoline incident. Granny was involved in checking out that story as were a number of us. Haven't heard a word since, some stories just fade away. One would hope it was found!!

"You will cry blood not tears"

That's what struck me about a picture that I just saw posted somewhere on here (I think someone had said it was a bookcover that had been modified 3 times) -- the tears were blood.

Pakistan Says Senior al-Qaida Leader Hurt

Pakistan Says Senior al-Qaida Leader Hurt 1 hour, 11 minutes ago

By CHRIS TOMLINSON, Associated Press Writer

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistan's military badly wounded a senior al-Qaida leader, who is now hiding out in the country's western tribal area, a military spokesman said Saturday.

Al-Qaida commander Tahir Yuldash — also known as Tahir Yuldashev — had been mentioned earlier as one of two possible "high-value targets" cornered when Pakistan's military began a sweep of South Waziristan on March 16.

In a statement, military spokesman Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan said only that recent intelligence indicated that Yuldash was severely wounded and in hiding in western Pakistan.

Yuldash is the leader of an Uzbek terror group allied with al-Qaida called the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.

Sultan said the sweep operation has been successful, with more than 50 suspected militants killed and 163 captured. Pakistani forces also suffered casualties, though Sultan refused to release figures until the operation is over.

Now, granted, it is an AP report, but if the Pakis are their source of intel, take it with a grain of salt.

Motorcycle Bomb Wounds 30 in Thai Muslim South
Reuters ^ | 03/27/04 | Kettiya Jittapong

Posted on 03/27/2004 10:29:04 AM CST by nypokerface

BANGKOK (Reuters) - A bomb hidden in a motorcycle exploded outside a bar in Thailand's largely Muslim south on Saturday, wounding about 30 people, including seven Malaysian tourists, a police spokesman said.

The bomb exploded outside a bar and hotel in Sunghai Golok district of Narathiwat province, which has been under martial law since an armed raid in January on an army camp in the region in which many weapons were stolen...

Muslim leaders have asked the government to lift martial law, which they say is disrupting economic life in a region heavily dependent on rubber tapping and fishing, which involves moving around at night...

The government is also having to deal with the disappearance of a prominent Muslim lawyer, Somchai Neelaphaichit, who was defending Thai Muslims on trial for membership of the al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiah.

Another case of soft targets being hit, but this time it's hard to tell who is doing the attacking since the targets in both instances seem to be Muslims.

EMERGENCY! 911 OUT FOR 2 HRS.
New York Post ^ | 3/27/04 | ZACH HABERMAN

Posted on 03/27/2004 3:27:01 AM CST by kattracks

March 27, 2004 -- The 911 system in Brooklyn and Staten Island crashed for just over two hours last night leaving cops and city officials scrambling to figure out the cause of the failure, officials said. "At this time, we're pleased to announce that the 911 service is fully operational and back to normal," said Gino Menchini, the commissioner for the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications, after the system was restored at 9:37 p.m.
Verizon, which handles the city's 911 service, was doing a software upgrade, which somehow knocked out service in parts of Staten Island and Brooklyn at around 7:25 p.m., but may have also affected service in Queens and The Bronx, said Menchini.

The Office of Emergency Management and the NYPD quickly released backup numbers and direct station house numbers. The city's 311 system received 80 emergency calls that were rerouted to the appropriate service.

"We're working with Verizon to make sure the system remains stable and we'll be meeting with them to make sure this type of problem doesn't occur again," said Menchini.

I would be greatly interested to see what type of background check Verizon does on their employees.

Forgive me if this is a duplicate post. I came across this FR thread that hints that there was a terror threat to I-95 in Connecticut BEFORE the tanker crashed??? (putting tinfoil hat on.) It's kind of unclear when the original article was dated, even going back to the original source, but it sure appears that the threat preceded the accident to me. Here is the link to the thread:
