"JOBS AT A RECORD HIGH!" - Fred Barnes
Fox News | 3/12/04 | Fred Barnes

Posted on 03/12/2004 4:07:52 PM PST by The G Man

Fred (The Beatle) Barnes on FOX just B-slapped Juan Williams after Juan-ton-ton (the lib who saved Hollywood) parroted the company line of a "jobless recovery" and people "leaving the workforce because they are so discouraged"

Fred then cut him off and went onto forcefully explain the difference between the "payroll survey" which polls employers as to their employment info and the "household survey" which polls, well, households as to THEIR employment. He went onto explain that if you use the household survey number EMPLOYMENT IS AT A RECORD HIGH BY $700,000 JOBS!!!

The household survey takes into account things like people who leave their jobs to become consultants, independent contractors, or to run home based businesses.

Juan was left dumbfounded.

This is our avenue of attack! This is the road that we conservatives need to take to counter the Dems slanderous allegations about the economic recovery. The workforce dynamic has changed over the last 10 years. The advent of the internet and eBay has made running a home based business a reality for countless Americans. Lets count 'em!

I'm not sure that's right.

I was talking to a stroing conservative the other day who was worried about the Repoublicans' vulnerability to the jobs issue. I mention the 5.6% unemployment rate and that its the same as 1996 and he wasn't even aware of it. Keep passing on this one fact to not only liberals but your conservative friends because not all of them are aware of it. There is no unemployment problem by historic standards. I may lose my job tommorrow but that's life.

I think Kerry's task is to keep at least 41 DemocRATs in the Senate.

How the Government Measures Unemployment

http://www.bls.gov/cps/cps_htgm.htm

Examples: "George Lewis is 16 years old, and he has no job from which he receives any pay or profit. However, George does help with the regular chores around his father's farm about 20 hours each week.

"Lisa Fox spends most of her time taking care of her home and children, but, all day Friday and Saturday, she helps in her husband's computer software store.

"Under the Government's definition of employment, both George and Lisa are considered employed. They fall into a group called "unpaid family workers," which includes any person who worked 15 hours or more in a week without pay in a family-operated enterprise. Such persons contribute significantly to our productive effort and are an important part of our labor supply, particularly in agriculture and retail trade. However, unpaid family workers who work fewer than 15 hours per week are counted as 'not in the labor force.'"

You don't have to be receiving a salary to be counted as employed. But of course you certainly would be employed helping the business. And looking for that next contract counts as employed?

Here's where both Parties can pound salt.

Dem Rats and their mainstream lackeys are bringing back the "worse economy since the depression" 1992 campaign again ignoring the growing economy. After the election the mainstream dropped the laid off workers stories and started reporting the growing GDP. Quoting dem Rats, the mainstream said that the turned around occurred because Clinton's election gave people confidence. I am not making this up. BTW, "jobless recovery" was first used in the early 1990s.

The Republicans can pound salt because of their "jobs is jobs" attitude. Here is from he latest BLS Employment Situation

http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm

The number of persons who work part time for economic reasons edged down in February to 4.4 million, seasonally adjusted. This category includes persons who indicated that they would like to work full time but were working part time because their hours had been cut back or because they were unable to find full- time jobs. (See table A-5.)

and this

In February, about 1.7 million persons were marginally attached to the labor force, about the same as a year earlier. (Data are not seasonally adjusted.) These individuals wanted and were available to work and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months. They were not counted as unemployed, however, because they did not actively search for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey. There were 484,000 discouraged workers in February, also about the same as a year earlier. Discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached, were not currently looking for work specifically because they believed no jobs were available for them. The other 1.2 million marginally attached had not searched for work for reasons such as school or family responsibilities. (See table A-13.)

Overlooked is, "job" no longer means steady employment with benefits. Scream that "nobody has a right to a job" but many of us are old enough to remember the days when you could count on it nevertheless. Let both parties admit the truth. Boy, am I naive!

I love that Fred did this, but where the hell are:
Bill Frist
John McCain
Roy Blunt
Denny Hastert
Don Nickles
Tom DeLay
Arnold Schwarzenegger
George Voinovich
Jim Talent
Susan Collins
ETC.???

Some of these are RINOs, others are safely in the conservative camp...all are members of the President's party, and all ought to be defending him vigorously!

I was sickened by seeing the Democrat Party Operatives in the Senate all standing behind Ketchup Kerry yesterday when the French-Looking Junior Lackey to Ted "The Swimmer" refused to apologize for calling Republicans crooks and liars. You talk about UNITY? Damn, they sure have it on the Democrat side: it ain't a happy unity...but they're bound and determined to destroy George W. Bush.

Why in the WORLD aren't we seeing the equivalent on the Republican side? For GOD'S SAKES: the Democrats stood behind Bill THE LIAR Clinton on the day he was impeached...you'd THINK the Republicans could get enough friggin' backbone to STAND UP for their own President who is leading a nation in a time of WAR! Whether you agree with the guy or NOT on taxes, overtime, the education bills, campaign finance, WHATEVER, he is head and shoulders above John F'ing Kerry and Bill "The Bent One" Clinton: both of whom enjoyed unwavering public support from their Party!!

<\soapbox>

"They still acts as if the losses in manufacturing is new thing"

Yeah. Anyone whose been paying attention knows that manufacturing has been shedding jobs since the early 90's.

There just aren't any large, fat companies offering security and benefits right now.

Right you are. And there certainly won't be more under the 'Rats. What there is likely be, and this is a prediction since the Dims have not yet unveiled it, is a Work Projects-Administration (circa-1933) make-work program. Free market solutions are not in Dems' bag.
