I understand the Great Pyrenees will attack most predators, 2 or 4 legged. A neighbor has one he keeps with his goats. Huge coyote problem here, he rarely looses a kid.

I have had full grown cows killed by coyotes before. I like a multi use herd protector. Since I got a couple of mules, the coyotes stay away from the livestock. Plus, I can ride and plow the mules!

A good scope and a 6V lantern will light up the little beasties out beyond 500 yds. And canned tuna or cat food seems to attract them at night.

Yep. Lots of people here in the hills keep the Great Pyrenees with their goats. They do a good job.

Feral dogs are a big problem lots of places. Snares are one solution. Snaring coyotes is relatively easy compared to other trapping methods as well.

Try convincing newly countrified city clymers of that! Caught one of my recent-ex-Boston neighbours letting his German Shepherd out at night. Had to tell him we use "Alaska Rules," that is, a loose dog is a dead dog. Our problem is a pesky hybrid Coy-Dog, a Coyote/Domestic/possible Wolf cross that's bigger than a coyote, looking like a wolf in build, and quite possibly lethal to people, especially kids.

I too have cried at the loss of a wonderful bird dog. No shame in it.

I wonder what will be said when re-introduced Wolves drag a child away for lunch. These animals are killers and will kill for sport as well as food.

At 2 a.m. Sunday, a coyote killed her and snatched her from her back yard. The 3-year-old dog, named Dublin......


What was the coyote's nickname? Wolfie?

These upper crusters should adopt a coyote instead of having purebred dogs. Make coyotes into pets. Problem solved!

Not likely, unless it has been trained out of its natural fear of human beings.

WHAT "natural fear of humans"?

A coyote who comes into a human back yard can be assumed to not have much fear of humans. Why should it? Humans are not especially fast, don't have sharp teeth or claws, and don't have sharp senses. There is nothing "natural" about coyotes having fear of humans.

Coyotes, in generations passed, have become conditioned to stay away from humans, in the days where being seen by a human would earn one a bullet. I doubt if this fear has made it into the DNA, though. And now that a coyote can come within a few yards of a human without bad consequences, and human habitations are a rich source of easy food (whether backyard poodles or overturned garbage cans), any conditioned intergeneral fear is about gone.

A coyote may be wary of an alert adult human, purely because of the human's larger size. But a human infant without an adult near it? Easy dinner

The coyote had jumped a 2-foot-high fence in the back yard and attacked the small dog.

I've seen coyotes jump SIX-ft high fences. Usually they sort of clamber over, but one time -- when I was chasing one away from my chicken coop -- the coyote took a flying leap and soared over the 6 ft. chain link fence with substantial airspace between him and the fence top.

Near our house, there were a bunch of animals killed by coyotes about three years ago. Dogs, chickens, geese. Some of the neighbors got together and held a coyote hunt.

It was much more constructive than juvenile exhibitions of grief and more satisfying.

I am amazed at how many FReepers fail to see this as an eco-terrorist problem. Every time a human or domesticated animal is killed by a protected predator, it is a victory for them. At least a few have held coyote hunts.

We have coyotes here on the island too! I hear them yelp at night.

Tucson is filled with em, a few shots keeps them away.
