John Kerry is AWOL in the Senate!

When it comes to Senator John "Flip-Flop" Kerry (D-MA), the Secretary of the Senate refuses to enforce the law.

So now, the American Conservative Union (ACU) -- the nation's oldest conservative lobbying organization -- is going to court, with a lawsuit to compel the Senate to enforce the laws of the land.

Here are the facts: in 2003 Sen. John Kerry missed 292 votes, or 64 percent of the votes in the Senate. This year he has missed ALL of the first 22 Senate votes... until he rushed back to Washington at the behest of the gun control crowd to cast votes for a series of anti-Second Amendment measures.

In fact, according to the Boston Herald (3/1/04), "Kerry has been a virtual no-show in the U.S. Senate over the past 14 months, but he hasn't missed a paycheck," even though "federal law says some of his $158,000 salary should have been withheld."

U.S. Code allows a Senator to be absent from the Senate ONLY because of serious illness or illness in an immediate family member. Under the law, if a Senator is absent while the Senate in session, his pay MUST be docked for every day he is AWOL.

But the Secretary of the Senate REFUSES to dock Sen. Kerry's pay for the days he is absent running for President. In fact, in response to ACU's letter demanding that she enforce the law, the Senate Secretary said that, because her predecessors had failed to enforce the law, she wouldn't enforce it either!

That means the Massachusetts senator has been away from his post in the Senate chamber for at least 128 days over the past 14 months.

As you know, Section 39 of the United States Code Service requires the Secretary of the Senate and the Chief Administrative Officer of the House to deduct daily pay from members for each day they are absent. The only legal excuse is if the senator or representative, or one of their family members, is ill, the law states.

It's OFFENSIVE to all Americans that Sen. Kerry is still receiving his full Senate pay. It's a slap in the face to every hard-working taxpayer who shows up to work every day to earn their pay.

Sen. Kerry is not showing up for work and he shouldn't get paid. He certainly doesn't need the money.

Emily Reynolds

Emily J. Reynolds was appointed Secretary of the Senate when the Senate convened on January 7 for the 108th Congress. Prior to her appointment as Secretary, Reynolds was the chief of staff for Senator Bill Frist. She is the thirty-first person, and the fifth woman, to serve as Secretary of the Senate.

Reynolds began her career in politics in 1980 as a special assistant to Senator Howard H.Baker, Jr. In 1985 she worked on the successful Senate campaign of then-Governor Kit Bond of Missouri. Subsequently Reynolds worked in seven statewide campaigns in six states, including the Senate campaigns of John Danforth, John Heinz, and Kay Bailey Hutchison. She joined the Bush/Quayle presidential campaign in 1992 as deputy director of national coalitions.

A native of Nashville, Reynolds returned to her home state of Tennessee in November 1993 to serve as deputy campaign manager and finance director for Dr. Frist’s Senate campaign. During Senator Frist’s first term in the Senate, Reynolds became his state director. She then managed his successful reelection campaign in 2000. As chief of staff for Senator Frist since January 2001, Reynolds supervised his Washington, D.C.and Tennessee offices.

Reynolds received a B.A. in political science and television/radio/film from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. Immediately following her graduation in 1978, she was named as the college's associate director of admissions. She has remained active with her alma mater and served on the board of curators and as chair of the alumnae development board.

Here's something that's fairly interesting: From 1987 to 1996, most of the senators who had the lowest roll call records were Democrats. I wish I had more current numbers.
