Pro-gay rally against LISD policy remains peaceful By RAY GLASS AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
School officials and a federal judge drew criticism Thursday during a rally protesting school policy and a court ruling that have blocked a Gay Straight Alliance student group from meeting at Lubbock High School.
Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youngsters "are faced with hate not only from classmates, but here in Lubbock from school officials and federal judges," Megan Bauer said to about 50 people on a sidewalk outside the George H. Mahon Federal Building.
Bauer is president of Lambda Law Students at Texas Tech and helped organize the rally.
Protesters gathered on the west side of the building, waving posters and flags, displaying banners and applauding speakers.
There were no incidents during the 30-minute protest.
Lubbock Independent School District administrators have refused to give the Gay Straight Alliance access to the Lubbock High campus.
U.S. District Judge Sam Cummings last week ruled in favor of the LISD in a lawsuit brought by members of the Gay Straight Alliance.
Cummings decided LISD officials acted legally because school districts have a right to bar certain topics from campuses.
"The judge and the small group of people who make unfair and unjust decisions do not speak for the people of Lubbock," said Lubbock High senior Mirah Curzer, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
She said officials denying the group's request "is their last push because they know they are losing power. Change is inevitable."
Rene Caudillo, co-founder of the group that eventually became Lubbock High Gay Straight Alliance, thanked people for their support.
Other speakers Thursday included Randall Ellis, executive director of Lesbian Gay Rights Lobby Texas in Austin; the Rev. Renae Phillips of Metropolitan Community Church in Lubbock; and Jennifer Bard, Tech School of Law associate professor.

That said, had they banned our clubs we probably would have shrugged it off and went to McDee's after school to meet or something.
A much ado about nothing these days, everyone wants to be the next victim for some reason. Maybe because victimhood is the only argument they have.
Unless Lubbock has changed an awful lot since I was last there, yeah they do...
Does this kind of talk not alarm anybody else? I guess it shouldn't surprise me though. These kind of people are the same kind who defied the state laws in San Francisco and married queers. They have no respect for law and any body of our judicial system. They see themselves as taking over.
I'm telling you now, that these people are more dangerous than any terrorist group because unlike the terrorists the homo lobby is not just killing us outwardly---they're eating away at our nation's soul, and that will one day be our undoing. The unraveling of our soul by abortion, homosexuality, the undoing of the family, the emasculation of men, the masculinization of women, and MOST OF ALL the rejection of God in not only the public arena but in our everyday lives is what is going to destroy us.
Terrorism is scary, but this is even more frightening to me.
