Two weeks ago, IDF purchased several hundred state-of-the-art rifle scopes, manufactured by the Israeli Metrolight company at a cost of $5 million. The intention is to equip all fighters with the new scope before the end of the year.
The scope was awarded the first prize at an international competition, said an IDF warfare equipment expert. It does not use a battery and is charged from a light source through an optic fiber. The fighter aims with the help of a red dot, keeping both eyes open.
The Golani Brigade soldiers have already received the scopes. Soldiers who have used it said that the scope allows faster reaction time and more accurate fire.

If you have a bunch of guys aiming all at once how do you know which red dot is yours?

It's not a projected red dot like that sent out by a laser. It's just a red dot which exists inside the sight, and appears over the target, as opposed to a black cross-hair reticle.

This is the Trijicon ACOG, a high-end American product which also uses no battery. There are lots of differences between this and the Israeli product as well, from the sound of it.
About the ACOG:
"The Trijicon ACOG is an internally-adjustable, compact telescopic sight with tritium illuminated reticle patterns for use in low light or at night. The Trijicon ACOG combines traditional, precise distance marksmanship with close-in aiming speed. Also, Trijicon ACOG sights feature the Bindon Aiming Concept (BAC), which utilizes fiber optics to collect ambient light. This creates a bright daytime appearance of the reticle. The Trijicon ACOG has many features which are advantageous for military use, and they're excellent for many other applications."

I would be nice to find out the cost per unit and compare with the US contract with Aimpoint.

There was a lot of these that would reveal themselves to NVG's....had a back glow. I know special ops in USAF had a few like that but the problem was hopefully corrected in later production models. Check em before ya use em !
Stay safe !

It's a small red dot projected within the scope reticule. Works real well, but best to use both eyes open while sighting the target (at least for squirrels at close range). :O)

This is nothing like a laser sight, mate, so you don't see anyone else's "dot" than your own. It's like this: with one eye you look through the (non-magnifying) scope, where the dot of light is. With the other eye you look at the target. Combined sight of both eyes shows the target AND the dot.
And where yo light glow, is where yo bullet go.
Easy, eh? Works well under low light conditions.

I know what a conventional red-dot sight is - I have one mounted on my bulpup AK... as well as an indexable 5 milliWatt 650nm laser.
I was just wondering if it was one of the new doohickies - the holographic ones - because it was bruited about as if it was something way-cool.
The big problem with conventioanl red-dots is that there is considerable forward-visible light signature. I hope this is not the case with the IDF items.

It contains tritium? If I'm not mistaken tritium is used in boosting the yield of a nuclear weapon. I thought it was an extremely poisonous gas.
