15-Year-Old Detroit Girl Dies from Botched Second Trimester Abortion

DETROIT, MI, March 11, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A 15-year-old in a Detroit suburb died January 8 as a result of a second trimester abortion. News of the death has not been published anywhere except a minor mention on a local Fox station.

Dr. Leigh Hlavaty performed an autopsy on 15-year-old Tamia Russell on January 9. Dr. Hlavaty told a local registered nurse and pro-life activist who contacted LifeSiteNews.com that the girl's death was caused by "uterine infarction with sepsis due to status second trimester abortion." She ruled the death as "normal." The doctor explained, "I ruled it normal because these complications are expected with this type of abortion."

The case is complicated by the fact that Russell's boyfriend was 24 and in Michigan that constitutes statutory rape. Moreover, the boyfriend's sister took Russell in for the abortion without the knowledge of Russell's parents. Michigan law requires parental notification for abortions for minors under 18.

Tamia's family told Fox that they did not even know their daughter was six months pregnant. The family is outraged over the incident and are blaming the abortionist at the Woman Care Clinic in Lanthrup Village for their daughter's death. Michigan pro-life activist Ann Norton told LifeSiteNews.com that the abortionist in question is Alberto Hotari.

Local police, and the attorney general are reportedly investigating the case however phone calls to the local police department were not returned by press time. Michigan Right to Life told LifeSiteNews.com they are following the case closely.

LifeSiteNews.com called the Woman Care Clinic to ask for a comment. After being put on hold for an excessive period of time, a woman who did not wish to be named said, "I'm sorry to tell you that because of all the privacy rules in effect, we cannot reveal any information."

I'm sure they didn't --- but she may not have been given any choice in this at all --- but that won't matter to the feminists obviously. She may have been forced or coerced by the man's sister and him --- you can pretty much literally drag a woman into an abortion clinic --- the abortionists are fine with that as long as they get their money.

Sad indeed. Perhaps some good will come from it in the end, in that abortion deaths SHOULD be reported, and that this is yet another case of PP wantonly breaking the rules.

Yes, this could happen to any of our own daughters. The politically correct mafia deplores date rape or sexual harrassment. But a clear case of statutory rape must be overlooked as soon as abortion enters the case.

No question, we need parental consent laws. And we need to hold abortion clinics responsible for complicity in rape and murder if they abort minor children without obtaining parental consent. Abortion is wrong in any circumstances. But it is especially dreadful in circumstances like these.

We call it statutory rape when an older man has consensual sex with a young girl, because she is too young to make an informed choice. In the same way, she is certainly too young to make an informed choice about abortion. In a just society, the boyfriend, the relative, the doctor, and all the clinic workers would be guilty of complicity in rape and murder.

I know its really past her death, try a yeah and 4 months late. However THIS IS STILL UP SO ITS NOT 2 LATE TO POST ANYTHING. I don't know if they got her boyfriend yet. I hope they did. Many girls out here that young date older guys. Its "the thing" now. Sad but true. Tamiia (not Tamia) is gone now, so whatever they do to that guy and or that doctor, ain't gonna make it any better. People forget about things like this cause the time, but things like this happen everyday. I was 1 of Tamiia's best friends, in junior and high school. Everyday I look at her obituary and think about how things woulda went if she only listened. Not only is the doctor, the sister, and the ex to blame, but so was Tamiia. At the end of that day she had the last say so. Thats no matter how much pressure it was on her. I think of you and I miss you. Instead of taking 1 life they took 2. Not realizing what pain that would cause so many people.
