Thieves Steal More Than 40 Manhole Covers in English City
Mar 11, 2004
The Associated Press
GLOUCESTER, England (AP) - If Dr. Foster of nursery rhyme fame went to Gloucester today, he would have more to worry about than falling into puddles. A gang of thieves has stolen more than 40 manhole covers in the southwestern English city, leaving dangerous holes in the streets, officials said Thursday.
The cast-iron covers and grates were taken late Wednesday or early Thursday, said Gloucester City Council spokesman Marcus Grodentz.
It could cost up to $50,000 to replace the covers, with some units having to be completely rebuilt, Grodentz said.
A Gloucestershire Police spokeswoman said the thefts could be due to a recent increase in the price of heavy scrap metal.
"I have never heard of anything like this before. I have no idea why anyone would want to steal manhole covers," she said. "All I do know is that the price of scrap metal has gone up recently."

All right...someone fill us in on Dr. Foster, please. Dr Foster went to Gloucester
In a shower of rain;
He stepped in a puddle,
Right up to his middle,
And never went there again.

Maybe they should offer $25,000 for their return. $50,000 for 40 manhole covers? What da heck are they made out of?

I found 40 manhole covers in my backyard. If they will pay the shipping and $25,000 they can have them back.

Kids used to do that sort of stuff where I grew up
usually youd find them rolled into a ditch or creek somewhere. The city started tacking them down with an arc welder. You could still steal them but youd have to bring a grinder and cold chisel or air chisel. Itd make a lot of racket and take some time.
Some cities lock them down with bolts that require a special key to unscrew them. Sort of like the locking lug nuts people put on their fancy wheels.

My first thought is this.
Attatch large bombs to the underside of all 40 of them and put them in new locations. 10 simultanious bombs in Spain.
How about 40 simultanious bombs in England??
Hope it is just for scrap.
