Another masterpiece from the best columnist on earth.

William Safire, The New York Times' in-house "conservative" -- who endorsed Bill Clinton (news - web sites) in 1992, like so many conservatives

Is there anything in the Bible that quotes God as saying "Unless they kill my son, forget about Jesus holding any special sort of reverence"? Oh, special sort of reverence was certainly possible. But salvation? Nope, the Bible makes it pretty clear that that sacrifice had to be made for Man to be saved. Even a dumb agnostic like me can figure that out from reading the book.

"The only religion that can be constantly defamed and insulted is the one liberals pretend to be terrified of." They're not pretending. Many might not realize that they are afraid of it...but they are.

"Ann "The Blade" Coulter smites again." "...and she cuts like a knife, and it feels soooooooo right!"
I wish I had the wit to say things the way she does... it's like that kung foo guy that has a gun aimed at him, snatches the gun away from the villian, dismantles it and toses it the parts, then chops the guy to a pulp with hands and feet.

Safire has been a whore for 30 years. The first one to trash Nixon before any evidence was in!
Safire was a speech-writer for Nixon (and Agnew) before he joined the Times in 1973. In his NYT columns, he defended Nixon during the Watergate proceedings, and defended Nixon's actions as President for several years after Nixon's resignation.

"it was a Roman who ordered Christ's execution, and Romans who did all the flaying, taunting and crucifying. Perhaps Safire is indulging in his own negative stereotyping about Jews by assuming they simply viewed Romans as "the help."
As the descendent of ancient Romans, I am highly offended by this. I am also offended that Mel Gibson blames the whole thing on the Romans.
I prefer the "Life of Brian" take on we SPQR's:
"Now, take my case. They hung me up here five years ago. Every night, they take me down for twenty minutes, then they hang me up again, which I regard as very fair, in view of what I done, and, if nothing else, it's taught me to respect the Romans, and it's taught me... that you'll never get anywhere in this life, unless you're prepared to do a fair day's work for a fair day's pay! "I find that hard to believe." Why? Redemption required blood sacrifice. Because Jesus was the perfect sacrifice (Lamb of God), there is no more need for animal sacrifice. When that which is perfect comes, that which is imperfect will be done away. Anyway, since He is called the Lamb of God slain before the foundation of the world, the point is moot anyway. The only way He would have died of old age would have been to defy the Father, which He wouldn't have done, because He was one with the Father. He knew the purpose for which He had come. Everything in His life pointed to His death on the cross. He would rather there had been another way, but I don't think it ever occurred to Him to bail out.

That's an average of less than 100 [deaths from the inquisition] a year. Stalin knocked off that many kulaks before breakfast. That is a low estimate. Authoritative sources estimate anywhere from 20 million to 60 million Russians were killed as a direct result of Stalinistic "purges" during Stalin's rule, primarily in the 30's but extending onto during the war and beyond. This does not include the 20-30 million killed as a direct or indirect result of WWII. So if we estimate a smaller conservative number and figure on at least a million people a year for the time period when Stalin ruled we can do some math. One million people killed by the communists a year in Russia is 2,740 a day. Breaking that up into four periods -- before breakfast, before lunch, before dinner, and before bed -- gives us 685 per period. So the real number is probably much higher than 685 people that Stalin killed before breakfast for each day of his rule. Ann only estimated less than a sixth of that.
Such was communism -- the political system the Democrats of today worship. Keep that in mind come election day.
