McCain: I'd Entertain Kerry VP Offer

Republican Sen. John McCain allowed a glimmer of hope Wednesday for Democrats fantasizing about a bipartisan dream team to defeat President Bush.

McCain said he would consider the unorthodox step of running for vice president on the Democratic ticket — in the unlikely event he received such an offer from the presidential candidate.

"John Kerry (news - web sites) is a close friend of mine. We have been friends for years," McCain said Wednesday when pressed to squelch speculation about a Kerry-McCain ticket. "Obviously I would entertain it."

But McCain emphasized how unlikely the whole idea was.

"It's impossible to imagine the Democratic Party seeking a pro-life, free-trading, non-protectionist, deficit hawk," the Arizona senator told ABC's "Good Morning America" during an interview about illegal steroid use. "They'd have to be taking some steroids, I think, in order to let that happen."

McCain gained a reputation as a party maverick who appeals to independent voters during his 2000 race against Bush for the Republican nomination. This year, McCain has campaigned for the president and said he would continue to do so.

Unlike some other Republican senators, he hasn't railed against Kerry, a fellow Vietnam veteran. McCain called the Kerry-Bush contest "the nastiest campaign so far that we have seen" and said he preferred campaigning for candidates instead of against their opponents.

Its not going to happen. The Democrats are not going to swallow a pro-life deficit hawk and pro military Senator from Arizona. Especially the anti-America nuts who make up the Democratic Party's current base.

McCain's savvy enough to know that his popularity rests on his "maverick" image

"Entertain," maverick, press agent responds with "McCain will not run for VP in 2004." Lots of smoke, no fire.

Absolutely right. McCain won't run in 2004 for the same reason you won't see Hillary... both are hedging their bets. If Bush slips in November, McCain would have another shot in 2008, same as Hillary if Kerry loses.

...I can't believe I've found something in common between the two, actually. They both also love the cameras.

If you're confused, then the Leftist Media has succeeded. That was tossed out there just to make it look like John F'em Ke(rr)y was open-minded. Al Sharpton has more of a chance being on Ke(rr)y's ticket than McShame, especially once he finds out just how much of the spirit of McShame-Slimeroad Ke(rr)y and his fellow DemonRAT travellers are violating.

Of course, we are talking about McShame here, who flips about as often as Ke(rr)y, so don't quote me if I turn out to be wrong :-) I doubt I am, though.

"John Kerry is a close friend of mine. We have been friends for years," McCain said Wednesday when pressed to squelch speculation about a Kerry-McCain ticket. "Obviously I would entertain it."

I have read many of the responses and believe very few people have a clue what McCain meant.

I believe what McCain meant was that in the unlikely event that Kerry were to ask him to be his running mate he would not insult a long time and respected friend by ignoring him.

They'd be smoking something pretty strong, stronger than they usually do," McCain (R-Ariz.) told The Post. "I will not leave the Republican Party." I don't think McCain is going anywhere....

If McCain does jump ship, he'll say something like "I didn't leave the Republican Party, the Republican Party left me."

That would be assuming that the Democrats had principles. If putting McCain on the ticket would assure a Kerry victory, the Democrats would start chugging the McCain kool-aid!
