What I would do is start at fema.gov and see if they have anything on that.

Take a look at what the cleanup process for the Mt. Hood explosion was, they're similar.

You might do a search on the town of Orting in the Puyallup (don't even attempt a pronunciation) Valley. I believe they've done a lot of prep work on evac routes, etc.

"We are students at a school in NJ and are required to do a report on Mt.Rainier and what the government plans to do in case of an eruption." My understanding is that a team of experts will be flown in from NJ, who will throw cigarette butts on the ground in sufficient quantities to stem the lava flow...#8-)

Rent 'Dante's Peak' with Pierce Brosnan. It's very realistic I'm sure.
seriously. Study Mt. St. Helens it erupted nearly 25 years ago.

When Ex-President Carter was in the White House, he
wanted to stop the lava flow by dropping green backs
over the volcano. Then he wanted to call it the Magma Carter.

One thing to keep in mind is you can have a massive disaster at Mt. Rainier killing thousands of people
WITH NO ERUPTION AT ALL.
Much of the mountain could simply collapse suddenly without warning, leading to a massive debris flow extending miles through populated areas. One myth is that this would require an eruption; it does not. Hot water circulating through the volcano is rotting it from within, and part of it could simply collapse through gravity without warning at any time.

I am an environmental technician in Washington State and have done some evaluation of geologic hazards. Mt Rainier is a significant threat; there are heavily urbanized areas sitting atop the debris fields of past lahars, some of which are 500 feet deep. While the Rainier does pose a threat, Glacier Peak to the northeast of Seattle is regarded by many to be the most dangerous volcano in the Cascades. It has a history of building lava domes along its flanks which are very unstable and in the past has created very large debris flows. A volcanic eruption is not required for significant events to occur; heavy rains, mudslides, and quickly changing temperatures can initiate disaster. If a major event were to occur on either of these two peaks, the ability of the authorities do do anything but sit and watch (and run like hell) is zero.

While stationed at Ft. Lewis I read that an eruption of Ranier would put 11 cubic miles of debris in Puget Sound.
Oh, and Ranier beer tastes like watered down Pearl.

required to do a report on Mt.Rainier and what the government plans to do in case of an eruptionWell, the Liberals will most likely run amuck through the major urban areas, looting and stealing everything they can get their hands on... then, they will turn against each other killing, raping, stealing etc... untill all resources are consumed.
Then, as they begin to move into the rural areas, their rampage will be greeted by gun-owning americans who were prepared for the disaster. They will try to steal food, medicine, etc... but will recieve only hot lead.
Hope this helps! ;0)

See here for the Orting evac plan...
My 83 year old Grandmother plays cards at one of the local animal lodges (elks, eagles, etc..) and they have signs up all over the place about what to do...
I personally think they at the lodge would grab a drink and watch...
The town is like an island...surrounded by 2 rivers...
Basically it doesn't look good for any of the area if a major eruption happens.
Hope you can get to the link...
