WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Bush administration backed off plans to require that millions of visa-carrying Mexicans who make short visits to America and stay close to the border be fingerprinted and photographed to get into the country.
Asa Hutchinson, the Homeland Security department's undersecretary for border and transportation, was to publicly announce the policy change at a Capitol Hill hearing Thursday, a congressional official who was briefed on the plan told The Associated Press.

Tiny steps towards erasing the border.
Anyone remember the story of the slowly-boiled frog?

Yes, here comes the tinfoil.
Get used to it, it's the New World Order and it's coming to a planet near you.
Oh, and don't forget to roll out the welcome mat for our new "Mexican" amigos who get to freely cross the border. They wouldn't try to do anything like terrorist attack us, would they?

Whatsup with this? I thought this was already settled. Nothing is settled until Vicente Fox decides it's settled.

Other than the obvious dilemma of several million undocumented and illegal migrants coming into this country each year, there is the problem of
drug trafficking over the border.
That is where Asa Hutchinson (ATF) comes into the picture. It is surprising that Bush is playing ATF in such a large role in ushering in his new "amnesty" program and linking it with controlling the problem of drug trafficking over the border.
Thoughts?

What good is this card, if the person presenting it at the border isn't confirmed as its auhorized user
EACH AND EVERY TIME THEY USE IT TO CROSS? The person presenting the card at the border must have their fingerprints scanned and compared to those originally used to obtain the card or the whole security measure is worthless.
What about this is so hard for you to understand?
For example, if you present one of these cards at the borders, how can the border guards verify that it really is your card without comparing your fingerprints to those stored in the data base?
What's the point of getting someone's fingerprints up-front, if they won't be checked every time they use the card?
One doesn't need to be a security professional to understand this, all it takes is a little common sense.
And yes, this should be done at our border with Canadopia, as well.

"My original point was why require the visa interview and fingerprints if it is meaningless? If the visa means nothing, fingerprint and photograph everytime, sure. But why go through the charade of ever getting the meaningless visa? Seems a waste of time, money and resources."
I think the writer messed up and that this applies to the new "laser passport. As to the waste of time, money and resources, did you think that the politicians would allow the saved money to be spent on citizens?
Not under this administration they won't.

These people have legal visas and come over the border to work every day. They've already been photographed and fingerprinted to get the visa. Think about it. The visas have a photograph that can easily be replaced with that of another person. Any fingerprinting performed before a visa is issued is filed. Ostensibly the fingerprint file can be used if the person becomes ill, dies or commits a crime while in the USA.
Abandoning the fingerprint scan requirement is probably not a big deal so long as the visa can be designed to show thats its contents have not been disturbed. It is feasible to do that.

What about this is so hard for you to understand? Do we do this with other nations? It's just a question. Do we do this with Canadians, for example?
To: B4Ranch
Not under this administration they won't. I take it you would prefer a different administration?

What machine scans and matches faces and fingerprints? Didn't they try face scanners at airports and the idea bombed? I also doubt that the fingerprints of a day laborer match one day to the next - anyone who has worked with their hands knows what this does to the fingertips. What machine is going to take this into account?

I'm convinced that GWB does not want to be re-elected. He has never gotten tough with Mexico and and illegal alien issue, not once. He will push this amnesty through, with the help of his cowardly congress people, against the will of the American people. Sovereignty doesn't matter to him. Our votes don't count anymore.
To: Prodigal Son
You've got that right! I want one who understands the definition of sovereignty, border control, law enforcement, states rights, citizens rights, effective budgeting, amnesty and illegal alien.
El Presidente Fox must have the original video tapes of President Bush molesting children or committing some other reprehensible act. There is absolutely no reason why President Bush should get on his knees everytime Fox appears to want something!

So who do you prefer for this election? (who actually has a chance of winning)
To: Prodigal Son
This election doesn't make the slighest bit of difference towards sovereignty of our borders, border control, law enforcement, states rights, citizens rights, effective budgeting, amnesty and illegal aliens, with the current administration and it won't raise any eyebrows with Kerry and his sick bunch if they get in.
When President Bush popped up offering 120 million to the UN for their new headquarters building in New York he flushed the toilet on America as far as I'm concerned.
Take your choice between the Heavy Socialists (Kerry) and just the straight socialists (Bush). Both of them have the same goals, one will get us there faster than the other. Does it matter for you and me? Probably not because it will be our kids who will have to live with the new population explosion.
When the primaries come I intend on writing in Tancredo and when the generals come I'll probably just leave that line blank because neither one is worth spit in my book.

We should do this with visitors from every nation on the planet, but if we have to start somewhere it should be Mexico and the border we share with Mexico.
Most of the illegal aliens and dope that enter our country comes across our border with Mexico.
Most of the cars and personal possessions stolen from Americans that are smuggled out of the country leave by way of our border with Mexico.
These are facts. Face reality. Deal with it.
Too bad we can't find a President that can.

Does it matter for you and me?Maybe not for you. But I'm not going to piss on my countrymen by doing something that could see a man like Kerry in the White House. And that's exactly what I'd be doing- pissing on every man woman and child in America if I voted for Kerry (overtly or by default).
It's like this for me. If I have a choice between having both hands cut off or just one- I'll part with just the one. It's just rational. Cutting off both just to spite my tormentor is something only an idiot would do. If I'm making decisions for the welfare of my family and I have to choose between them hurting a little bit or hurting a lot- I have a moral imperative to choose the lesser suffering. Same goes for my nation.
I know a lot of people- perhaps yourself included- are utopian masterbators. They only want the perfect candidate/situation or they don't want anything at all. You can do what you want while it's still a free country, but I couldn't act in a way that would elect Kerry because it would be morally wrong of me and childish to boot. I'm too old to claim stupidity on this issue and stupid is exactly what electing Kerry would be if I have any say in it.
Hey, even the Greens learned their lesson from last time. All 'conservatives' who don't vote for Bush 'out of principle' are dumber than Greens. It would really suck in in January if you have to look yourself in the mirror and realize that you make the average Green look like f--king Einstein.
I fart in Tancredo's general direction. In January he's going to be just another loser. The only question will be- how many suckers does he take with him?

Canada admits: We're terror haven
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1088894/posts I'd say Canada is a cause for concern.
"These are facts. Face reality. Deal with it."
LOL. You guys crack me up. I'm worried about a little bit more than stolen goods and dope.
You see, single issue people are no different than any other fundamentalists. They can only see the world through their one little prism. There are other things though. Important things. Kerry is so bad that he makes Bill Clinton look good. He makes Clinton look really good. And that's quite an accomplishment.
Having a pulse and a 70+ IQ is all that's required to realize you have to do whatever it takes to keep Kerry out of office. Letting Kerry in the White House is the equivalent of falling asleep on guard duty and letting the enemy kill your buddies.
To: Prodigal Son; B4Ranch
A vote for Tancredo, or anybody but Bush, is a vote for gridlock. I'm voting for gridlock.
I'm not voting for Republican or Democrat open borders, Socialist, Amnestytistas, period.
To paraphrase a very wise FReeper, they'd all be a waste of good spit.
