BAGHDAD: A Jordanian extremist suspected of bloody suicide attacks in Iraq was killed some time ago in U.S. bombing and a letter outlining plans for fomenting sectarian war is a forgery, a statement allegedly from an insurgent group west of the capital said.
Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in the Sulaimaniyah mountains of northern Iraq "during the American bombing there," according to a statement circulated in Fallujah this week and signed by the "Leadership of the Allahu Akbar Mujahedeen."
There was no way to verify the authenticity of the statement, one of many leaflets put out by a variety of groups taking part in the anti-U.S. resistance.
The statement did not say when al-Zarqawi was supposedly killed, but U.S. jets bombed strongholds of the extremist Ansar al-Islam in the north last April as Saddam Hussein 's regime was collapsing.
It said al-Zarqawi was unable to escape the bombing because of his artificial leg. The statement said the "fabricated al-Zarqawi memo" has been used by the U.S.-run coalition "to back up their theory of a civil war" in Iraq.
"The truth is, al-Qaida is not present in Iraq," the Mujahedeen statement said. Though many Arabs entered the country to fight U.S. troops, only a small number remain, the group said.

Close to that. I think they know better than to think that our guys can be fooled. But there are scads of gullible people out there, many of them looking for excuses to contradict what we're saying about Iraq, and they may jump on this in a heartbeat. Its all propaganda.
Having said that, I think what it may show is that our repeating the facts about the Zarqawi letter after any violence that fits his M.O. may be having some traction on the ground. This propaganda may be designed to try to throw some grease under the traction.

The idea of a secular democracy in Iraq is very dangerous to this an other factions in the ME.A civil war would be right up their alley.

Yes, and the harder they fight it the more you know that it is viewed as dangerous to them.

"Leadership of the Allahu Akbar Mujahedeen." No, no...we are a genuine group of Iraqi insurgents who have named ourselves with just about the only three Arabic words a Westerner knows the meaning of...

Interesting.

There is serious PR campaign underway by the bad guys. This on the heels of leaflets being spread blaming us for the Ashura bombings. I just saw a demonstration from Iraq in which they are burning the American flag.
Iran is pulling the strings..

You know, its true that all of there names, for people and for organizations, all seem to blend together into one big incomprehensible mess. They all sound so much alike.
Having said that, these leaflets were circulating in Fallujah, so my guess is that someone locally made this up.

Iraq is a country that lives and breaths on rumors. The wild the rumor the more they believe.....and the group or country pulling the strings knows it.
This is an amazing turn....a PR campaign from the terror masters.

I've read something along that line, but I think that was before Gen. Kimmitt came out and toned downed much of the published information. I'm going to be careful about assuming too much.

This is a little PR I ran across Monday at jihadunspun.com:
Bin Laden Has Confronted American Forces Inside Afghanistan Numerous Times
Mar 01, 2004
By Zafir Jamaal
The chief of Al-Qaida, Osama Bin Mohammad Bin Laden, has confronted American forces many times inside Afghanistan says a Taliban spokesman. Speaking to Ausaf sources in Khost, Taliban spokesman Mohammad Saif ul Adil has said that Osama Bin Laden and Ayman Al Zawahiri are both in Afghanistan and not Pakistan as some officials claim. He went on to say that Osama Bin Laden has confronted Americans numerous times but the Americans did not recognize him.
In one interesting incident, Osama Bin Laden stayed very close to an American outpost for 15 days to observe its activities and Mujahideen later destroyed that base in a successful operation. He also said that Mullah Omar is in Afghanistan but is not in contact with Osama bin Laden as of now. (JUS)

I didn't see that "story," but I did see one over there a couple of weeks ago about 300 U.S. special forces guys "missing" in the area of "Nursitan" and they were implying that they might be dead. I got curious and looked on a map. I found that they meant Nuristan. They don't even bother to proofread their propaganda.
By the way, that area is near where Hekmatyar is rumored to be hanging out --- unless the Jang rumor from a week or so ago is true and he is in U.S. custody. When I heard that, I thought perhaps there is a tiny grain of truth in the propaganda. I would not be surprised if some of our guys are poking around up in that area.
