I hate to demonstrate my ignorance for all to see, but what is centerfire ammo? Centerfire ammunition is any ammunition that uses a percussion cap in the base of the shell/cartridge casing to ignite the powder. This allows you to pop out the percussion cap and use the casing over when you reload ammunition. Pretty much 98% of all rifle ammunition and any pistol ammunition above .22 caliber with few exceptions.
The other type of cartridge ammo is called rimfire because there there is no percussion cap in the center. .22 Long Rifle and .22 Short are the biggest sellers in rimfire ammo. You also cannot easily reload this ammunition.

I hate to demonstrate my ignorance for all to see, but what is centerfire ammo? Centerfire ammo is ammo which fires when it is struck in the center by a firing pin (all modern ammo except .22's) as opposed to rimfire ammo which fires when it is struck on the rim by the firing pin (no modern ammo except .22's). Your Mini-14 is centerfire.

Tough to explain, except that it's almost all ammo outside a 'rimfire .22'. All ammo where the primer is hit in the center.
That includes the mini-14, as well as a .30-30 Winchester, AK-47 ammo, the .308, .30-06, .243, 9mm, 10mm, 8mm, .243, .357, .300 win mag.....and on and on and on.

Thanks everyone!
Your Mini-14 is centerfire.
Every gun in my house is centerfire except for my son's plinker .22 rifle. Gosh, I suppose my shotguns are also, and I wasn't even counting them.

According to Kerry, his voting record is sacrosanct and not an issue in this election...all that matter is that he's a VN hero.

Basically, you'd be allowed to keep your .22 - then when all criminals had was .22's and the statistics showed that .22's caused all the injuries, they'd take them too.
To: Dan from Michigan
"In a recent report, the ATF identified three, .223 and the 7.62 caliber rifles, as the ones most frequently encountered by police officers."
These are the most commonly available calibers in law enforcement and the military, and the type most patriots will want to keep. Ammo for other rifles might become scarce.
To: Centurion2000
The way they'd slip it by is to stop the manufacture of new ammo. That way it wouldn't be an outright confiscation, and people would think "Oh well, I have quite a bit of ammo in supply." A false sense of security. Then, it would slowly dwindle until you had none left, or it was so "stale" that it was worthless. Now you're unarmed.

I own 7 guns, including a mini-14 that would have been effected by this amendment, but what makes its ammo "centerfire"?If ya don't know, you should probably sell the hardware. Two types of primers. Rimfire, as in a .22, which is struck by a firing pin on the edge of the cartridge case; and cannot be reloaded. Or a centerfire primer which is struck by a firing pin in the center of the cartridge case. Hence the expression "rimfire or centerfire."

Thanks for the info, but I'm not selling. I thought Kennedy was singling out some special ammo for this amendment. In fact, he was singling out virtually all ammo.

7.62 is .30 caliber. As in .30-06, .308, 300 magnum, etc.

7.62 is .30 caliber. As in .30-06, .308, 300 magnum, etc.
And the ubiquitous 7.62x51mm NATO caliber is essentially indentical and fully interchangeable with the the classic .308 Winchester civilian cartridge.

Yep.
It's a shortened .30-06, which was developed to cycle faster in automatic rifles, and to allow the use of shorter bolt actions.
I prefer the '.06, but it's about obsolete in combat arms.
To: RightthinkinAmerican
Time to buy that new Dillon press. I've been it putting off for too long.
