. . . could there be some forms of microscopic life still kicking on the innards of Mars? . . .

I wasn't until the relatively recent past that "life was impossible" in the deep ocean trenches by the boiling hot "smokers". When Mt. St.Helens blew up and "sterilized" the area with white hot ash and buried all life in dozens of feet of steril volcanic material scientists were surprised to discover "critters" growing in the "pristine" pools NEXT SPRING. As we drill deep within this planet it is difficult to find NO LIFE. . . EVEN IN "IMPOSSIBLE" PLACES.

No scale is shown, but the object you refer to appears . . .

I'm late to the party, Graewoulf. Please point me to the object of your comment.

A UV process would take a long time. There is still water on the surface: mostly in the polar caps but a trace still in the atmosphere. Sure hope they find substantial subsurface water because hauling water that far is going to be quite a chore.

Hmmm!

DESPITE the "Alleged Debunking" of the "High-Res-Pics," There is "Sufficient Data" to Warrant a CAREFUL, Well-Documented & Well Researched Study of the "Cydonia Site!!"

Nothing Less than a Human Expedition to the Site will EVER "Solve the 'Mystery'" of that Totally Enigmatic series of Photographs!

& NOW, There's Mounting Hard Evidence that we can find Water on Mars!!

We have NO OPTION, but to go there.

Since the Dawn of Human "Sociological-Biologic History," our Species has "Expanded" to EVERY Available Socio-Biolologic Niche. --The Planet ,Mars, is NO DIFFERENT! "Willy-Nilly-" we will "Go to Mars,!" --Because our Species EXPANDS, IRRESPECTIVE OF our BEST INTENTIONS to Control our "Impulse" to "Go Out!!"

We WILL, "GO OUT!!"

THAT is our "FATE,"--our Genetic & Cultural 'DESTINY!!'"

Yes, and NASA says those are "sand dunes."

They aren't sand dunes - and the watery history of Mars is just now beginning.

I missed the news conference this afternoon, just caught a few comments about it from Rush on the radio -- he wasn't being serious. I hope to read more.

"Sigh!"--Would that the "Intent" of that Music reflected the Coming Reality!!

"I Hear it, Too....."

We are "Better Than" the Suffocating Future envisioned by Those Who Assumme that we are Trapped on this Planet in a "Zero-Sum" Framework--that "Those Who Prosper" MUST diminish "Those who Lose!"

SUCH a "Social Arrangement" Has NEVER BEEN the Basis of our Economics!

Our Economics have ALWAYS been "Predicated On" the Concept that "Greater Profit creates greater expenditures," creates Greater Production, Creates More Jobs, Creates More Demand for the "Product," Creates More Jobs!

While the "System" is Imperfect, & Fluctuates, the "Average" of the Wealth of It's Participants seems to Steadily increase.

Because the "System" isn't "Closed,"--Because R&D keeps adding value to both Labor & Product,--ALL "Participants" in the "Socio-Economic" System can Increase their Worth;--AS LONG AS the "SYSTEM" CONTINUES to invent Furthur Societally Useful Products/Processes!

THIS is NOT a "ZERO-SUM Process!"

EACH NEW "Product/Process" ADDS VALUE & CREATES Wealth & Employment!

could there be some forms of microscopic life still kicking on the innards of Mars?

I'm gonna have to come up with my own ping list.

The resident "lunatic fringe" geologist is about to make a prognostication:

Just as Earth has life in the most inhospitable regions (black smokers, under the Antarctic ice sheets), Mars may indeed still have some life left. Although, it would likely be in deep, warm pockets of saline water. It therefore behooves us to get there as quickly as possible, perhaps to preserve some organisms from dying ecosystems.

Also...the presence of vast amounts of water on Mars implies something else...plate tectonics.

Ah...you still have faith. Alas, I am one of the poor unfortunates that have lost faith in the free exchange of scientific data. If the powers-that-be feel that the American public is still too juvenile to receive the facts as they exist, then I fear we will not hear of any such evidence.

Faith? Perhaps. Or perhaps its a just longer horizon on on how much time it will take to tell.

Novel ideas are usually adopted after their opponents have died of old age...

I'm still curious of whether a condition of dry wind-blown sand could deteriorate pockets of sulfate salt held in stone.
