I don't know what you all are going to do, but I think I will send a letter to Sen. Craig from Idaho and let him know that admiration for his efforts on this issue extend beyond the borders of his state.

I think I'll become a democrat so I can vote in more than one state.

Depends on if you are a firearms manufacturer or an FFL dealer. If you are, then no... you got hit. Or, at least you cannot count on any Federal legal support and you can be frivolously lawsuited to death.

The rest was amendments to the Bill and do not stand alone without passage of the Bill they were attached to.

I'd much rather lose an added industry protection than lose some hardcore rights issues. I'm shockingly pleased. Just amazed.

Even better (for them), they blame Republicans for it not passing. I never dreamed we had 90 Republicans in the Senate.

Senate Republicans Scuttle Gun Bill

By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Senate Republicans scuttled an election-year bill to immunize the gun industry from lawsuits Tuesday after Democrats amended it to extend an assault weapons ban and require background checks on all buyers at private gun shows.

The National Rifle Association began pressuring senators to vote against the bill after Democrats won votes on the two key gun control measures. The 90-8 vote against the bill virtually ends any chance for gun legislation to make through Congress this year.

"I now believe it is so dramatically wounded that I would urge my colleagues to vote against it," said Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, the sponsor of the gunmaker immunity bill.

Democrats won close votes on their amendments to change the Republican legislation, a strategy aimed at pressuring the GOP-dominated House to accept the restrictions to gain passage of the gunmaker-immunity bill.

While Democrats won't get the gun ban extension and the gun show legislation, they called the vote a success. "Look, everyone's between a rock and a hard place," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. "The immunity bill was a terrible bill. We're better off at the end of the day than we were at the beginning of the day."

It's dead. The bill that went through the amendment process, with much angst expressed on this board (some angst expressed by moi), has been soundly defeated, 8-90. CLearly, some Senators that were for extending the AWB were against the combination of extending the AWB and providing statutory immunity to firearms manufacturers. Soem Senators are cynically putting temselves on both sides of the issue.

I wonder if perhaps a lot of last minute calls/emails might've swayed some opinions too. If so, I am thankful to everyone who did, and to God too for this.

Not to mention that you would be able to keep voting long after you're gone. ;-)

Yikes. I stand corrected. Never underestimate the determination of the opponent. Not satisfied to pretend they never said it, tell the story vigorously with "appropriate" spin.

Seriously, I would like to hear the rationale from GOP Senators that voted for certain amendments, then voted against the bill based on the presence of those very same amendments. 90-8 is quite lopsided.

Wow, no bias in that article.

With 90 Republican votes in the Senate, passing S.1806 without amendments should be a piece of cake. </sarcasm>

"Criminals and terrorists are exploiting this obvious loophole in our gun safety laws," said Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona.

Someone ought to grab Johnny McMe by the short hairs, drag his worthless ass to the OPEN Mexican Border and Point out to him exactly what a "Obvious Loophole" the lack of Border Protection is, and how Criminals and terrorists are surely taking advantage of it, while he masterbates on the Floor of the Senate about Law abiding AMERICAN CITIZENS purchasing firearms to PROTECT THEMSELVES.

He is another Disgrace to Our Country, perhaps he could take the same slow train to hell with Orin (I'll trade my principles for friendship) Hatch.

Their subscribers, including 3 Omaha Radio stations, are still saying the AWB HAS been extended. No mention of the actual bill or it's defeat

PRESERVING OUR FREEDOM

This letter deals with Bill Clinton's (expletive deleted) so called "assault rifle" ban which is set to expire in September of this year, and which certain "socialist" politicians are trying desperately to reinstate, along with further infringements on our Second Amendment rights. I believe it's imperative that we all do what we can in order to prevent this from succeeding, and that nothing is more critical to the preservation of all of our other freedoms, and our quality of life, that this. If this action consists of simply forwarding this letter to people on your contact list, then you've already done your part.

As a matter of explanation, as a refugee from the "great socialist utopia" of Canada, whom the Bill & Hillary Clintons', Albert Gore's, Diane Feinstein's, John Kerry's etc., of this country so worship and admire. Also, as one who has spend 37 years of his life watching the progress, and living with the end result, of what these politicians are trying to accomplish in this country, i can give you several ironclad promises and guarantees.

Firstly: Everything that these politicians and their compatriots have ever told you about Canada is a lie and a fairy tale. If you're still inclined to believe these lies, then talk to some people who have actually lived there in the last few years.

Secondly: These politicians are not who they pretend to be. Their only purpose in life is to establish absolute power and control over your life, and the excuse of gun control is their primary means of achieving this. Their entire political philosophy is a lie. The great promise of Socialism to establish complete equality among all of the people can only be achieved if a small group of people is given absolute power in order to regulate the lives of the majority under them. This in effect establishes a feudal system of Lords and Serfs, with these socialist politicians as the Lords, and you as the Serfs. In any free society, where people are simply left alone, one person will work harder than the other, and in the end establish a better life for himself, with varying degrees of success for all, and you will generally get out of your life, what you put into it. This is as and how it should be, and where freedom exists, it can be no other way. I know these politicians far too well, and I have spent 37 years of my life listening to the same stories they tell are telling you here and now. I can promise you that their only purpose in attempting to establish this power and control over your life, is so that they can bully, control, and victimize you at will, for no other reason that that it will make them "FEEL" like a "REAL BIG" man or woman in order to be able to do so. Since their kind, are all cowards, they need to take away your guns because they don't want you to be able to do anything about it. This is compulsive behavior, to which there is no logic or reason. I would compare their motivations to this end, to that of sex and a 14 year old boy, in that until he finally manages to experience it for the first time, and realizes that the world will still be the same the next day as it was the day before, it's pretty much all that he will think about. These people generally achieve their power (votes), by making promises to people, who are too naïve to question their motives, or who are generally too stupid or too lazy to think for themselves, which they willingly offer to do for them, provided that these people give them the power to do so. If these politicians, and their political philosophy do not constitute "Satan's Religion" I don't know what would.

Thirdly: Each and every one of your freedom's, will last only as long as your ability to defend them, and not one minute longer. Those of you who think the banning of things like the, so called "Assault Rifle" is of no consequence to you, because it doesn't interfere with your hunting rights, think again. The Second Amendment was put into the Constitution for one reason, and one reason only, and it has nothing to do with hunting. The Second Amendment gives the people of this country the military capability to deal with any government who would abrogate the remaining rights and freedoms contained in the Constitution. Thereby guaranteeing that no government, regardless of what else they do, will inflict sufficient hardship on the people in order to make this necessary. In fact our government has been severely derelict in it's duty in that it has not organized and trained the population of this country into the Militia's required by the Constitution, in order to make them a more effective force against all enemies of our constitution, both domestic and foreign. The single and only effect of any ban on "Assault Weapons" is to reduce the military effectiveness of the population of our country, in order to allow the perpetrators to move one step closer to the absolute control and domination of your lives.

Fourthly: The excuse of using gun control to reduce crime is the greatest of myths. I actually talked to a woman today who had been told by these same socialist politicians that there was no crime in Canada, because they had gun control over there. I promptly informed her that the city of Winnipeg, where I am from, averages around 30 murders a year, not to mention rapes, burglaries, and whatever other crimes are taking place at any given time. This may not seem like a lot of murders for any one city, but keep in mind that there are only 500,000 people in Winnipeg. Compare this to the murder rates of US cities with populations into the multiple millions, and divide this murder rate per capita, and figure it out. For a kid to get a job at a Seven Eleven store in Winnipeg was pretty much considered a death sentence. The kid would generally last a week or two before some scumbag would come into the store and stick a knife in her, or shoot her with his "illegal" gun, and grab the 40 bucks in the till, which she hadn't put into the floor safe yet. The level of poverty in this city was so great though, that these kids would still work at these places, knowing full well what the likely outcome might be, not to mention the scumbag who was willing to kill someone for a miserable 40 bucks. Solving crime with gun control ?. "BULLSHIT" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recently, in the city of Edmonton, Alberta, an electronics store owner, who had been plagued by nightly break ins, decided to spend the night in his shop with his shotgun. During the course of that night, there was another break in, and the shop owner exercised what is currently the right of every American today, and he fired on the burglars in defense of his property, and possibly person as well. He wounded one of the burglars, all of which fled. The shop owner knew better than to report the incident, but the police caught the wounded burglar at a hospital where he went for treatment. The police then proceeded to forego all charges against the burglar, in exchange for him testifying against the shop owner, so that they could get him on charges of possession of an unregistered weapon, and using deadly force in defense of property. The burglar is back on the street and the shop owner will most likely get a sentence of 25 years or more. The bottom line of this is, that the shop owner was regarded as a threat to the power of the socialist government and it's Gestapo, as he was willing to take measures to defend his rights, and the burglar wasn't.

Lastly: If through our own ignorance and stupidity, we allow these socialist politicians to achieve their ultimate objectives, this will be the end result, which i have lived and experienced first hand. The only thing you will have left to look forward to in life is your own death, as then you will finally be free from the tyrant. Until then, your only purpose in life will be to serve your socialist masters, and this will be in their interest and not yours. If you are allowed enough success in life under this system in order to make your life bearable, it will only be the result of belonging to the right family, kissing the right asses, pretending to be a "good little communist", and possibly helping these people to enforce their power over the rest of the population, which will be at the cost of your soul. Any such success you are allowed will also be minimal at best. Your children will curse you for having brought them into this world, which is also why I have never had any children of my own. Now that I am out of that wonderful place I am too old, and with my wife it is no longer possible to have children, but she has given me two wonderful kids and grandkids whom I love as my own, so I seem to have gotten the best of both after all.

Some of you may, or may not, at some time have felt the need to own a gun for protection against crime, and when these politicians get their way, you will still have this need, only you won't be able to get one, at least not legitimately. Further to this, you will also need this same gun for protection from the police, as they will represent a far greater threat to your freedom and security than any criminal could ever hope to. Those of you who are not cowards and sycophants, if you value things like freedom and justice more than you value your own lives, and if you are resourceful enough, will either manufacture, or obtain illegally, the means to defend your freedom, and that of others. If you are able to do this, your life will be no better than it was before, but at least, the worst thing they will be able to do to you is kill you, and eventually, they will. I can think of no better or more honorable way to die than this, but i still think it would be infinitely preferable if we could all simply continue to enjoy the freedom and prosperity which we have today, and maybe even establish more of it, for ourselves and others, so that we could live long, fruitful, and productive lives, and all die in bed of old age.

In closing, I beg all of you to please do anything you can in order to help preserve the United States of America and the rights and freedoms it represents. This should begin with knowing the policies and the views of the people you are voting for, and not voting for those who would abrogate our freedoms. We also need to let our politicians know that any one who supports any measure designed to limit our ability to defend our freedom and security as individuals, will no longer have our votes. We also need to educate those individuals, who don't understand the consequences of the actions being taken against their freedom. We need to be prepared to provide resistance, by whatever means, to the destruction of our freedom, before such a time as effective resistance is no longer possible. The step by step destruction of freedom, which has happened in the rest of the world, is most certainly happening here. Only in this country it is taking slightly longer, because of our Constitution, political structure, and most importantly, that the people still have a significant capability to defend their freedom should it be required. It is only because of organizations like the National Rifle Association (who in my opinion still don't really understand the full gravity of the consequences if they should fail), and the few politicians we have, who actually put the interests and freedom of the people, before their own desire for power, that any of us have any freedom at all. It is absolutely imperative that we keep what freedom we have instead of throwing it way for some lie and fairy tale that can never exist. We have the only country in the left in the world where there is a sufficient degree of freedom and prosperity in order to make life a worthwhile thing. Those of you who have been told things are better elsewhere, please believe me, this is as good as it gets, and coming from where I came from, I regard this country as close to an earthly paradise as anything I could imagine. I sincerely hope that we can keep it this way, and maybe make it even better. I will finish this email with a quotation (translated from the original German), which will sound very familiar to all of you, as you have heard something similar many times, but you'll never guess who it came from:

"This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future"

Adolf Hitler, 1935

For those who would like to believe that democracy will protect you, keep in mind that Adolf Hitler was voted into power. Within a year, he had accomplished the foregoing, which led to gun confiscation, after which there were no more elections, and after with he proceeded to round up all of the Jews, and anyone else he hated, or regarded as a threat to his power in order to send them to the gas chamber. He could do this because he was the only one left with a gun.

Actually, Hatch was dead on with respect to gun rights. Every bit as eloquent in his dissertation as Senator Craig was. Maybe not among the greatest orators of the last five hundred years, but plenty respectable in their own right on this issue at least. Especially comparing them to their opponents on the left who's facade of indignation and outrage was so patently false that they themselves could barely read their scripts with a straight face.

Do not take this to construe any belief on my part that the two above mentioned gentlemen aren't COMPLETE flibbertigibbets on every other issue. Not having seen them expound upon other topics, nor done a study of their voting records, I am under qualified to make such a determination.
