Iraqi police nabbed two persons Feb. 29 who were apparently preparing to launch a rocket-propelled-grenade attack on a local council meeting in Bajar, northern Iraq.
The suspects, according to a Combined Joint Task Force 7 press release, were arrested and then turned over to coalition forces along with one RPG launcher and three RPG rounds.
Also Feb. 29, U.S. 14th Cavalry Regiment soldiers detained three persons suspected of anti-coalition activities during an operation in Rabiyah in northern Iraq, and American 23rd Infantry Regiment troops in Mosul seized two persons suspected of stealing and selling weapons in northern Iraq. Meanwhile, in Hammam al Alil, U.S. soldiers detained two people suspected of stealing products from a fuel depot.
Members of the Coalition for Iraqi Unity, a civic group in northwestern Iraq, met with members of the 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, at Sinjar and turned in one RPG round, three RPG boosters, one RPG launcher, 40 14.5 mm rounds and one pound of TNT. Also, a civic-minded Iraqi citizen turned in one 82 mm mortar, six 82 mm mortar shells, one 60 mm mortar and six 60 mm mortar rounds to 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, troops in Qarrayah.
In Baghdad, a concerned Iraqi citizen's tip led U.S. troops in the Feb. 26 discovery of a weapons cache in the Rashid district, according to another CJTF 7 release. The citizen told 1st Battalion, 94th Field Artillery, troops that he'd seen a suspicious gathering in the neighborhood the night before.
The American soldiers investigated the location provided by the Iraqi and found 60 122 mm artillery shells, 25 RPG rounds, 100 23 mm rounds, seven 125 mm tank rounds, five RPG rounds, 22 14.5 mm rounds, and a hand grenade.
