Former 2nd District Congressman Dr Tom Coburn has announced he will run for the US Senate.

Coburn will run as a Republican for the seat Senator Don Nickles is leaving. He made his announcement on a website called Draft Coburn for Senate.com.

On the website, Coburn says the decision to run was a difficult one. He lists six reasons for running including what he calls a deficit of moral courage in the US congress.

He also mentions his concerns about Medicare, Social Security, trade issues and spending controls.

Coburn is a medical doctor with offices in Muskogee.

Coburn is probably our best candidate to hold the Oklahoma senate seat of retiring Don Nickles.

My decision to run for the Senate has been a very difficult one as I struggled with what I thought I should do and what I wanted to do. I have resolved to follow my convictions and seek to become Oklahoma's next U. S. Senator for the following reasons:

I was raised in Muskogee and know the Coburn family. Great people with solid values. B'lieve they went to my church, too.

Fortunate for everyone who wants to hold the seat, though it's not my state. Kirk Humphreys is a good candidate IMO, but Coburn's a superstar conservative with strong electoral appeal.

Ah, a candidate. Inhofe and Coburn will represent us well.

If Coburn ran for Carson's seat, it would have been a guaranteed pick up.

Oh, ok. But he had ruled that out a while ago, no matter what politics1 said.

He's nailed it. I would vote for this guy. If y'all don't elect him, send him to Tennessee.

I read his book, and I encourage EVERYONE to read it. I saw him on a couple of shows, but it's interesting that Scarborough never had him on; and he was one of his compadres from the congressional freshman of '94.

I definitely will send him some dollars. He's one of the very few with true integrity.

This is most awesome. The good Dr. has written a great book which people need to read. I'm upset that I cannot remember the name of it - but you OK FReepers should start promoting that book. I saw him on Booknotes talking about the book. I was so impressed!

I'm very excited he's going to run again.

You are correct, Coburn is our best chance. I wish Inhofe had waited on endorsing Humphreys. I do not want an ugly primary, but I am afraid that Carson can beat Humphreys. Carson is a formidable candidate and Rebublicans need to put their best person forward. I do not want to lose that Senate seat!!! It would be devasting!

I wish Inhofe had waited on endorsing Humphreys.

It sure is a little awkward now. I have no problem with party leaders supporting the candidate they think is best -- they SHOULD do that -- but if they (Inhofe, Watts, Cole) could re-evaluate their endorsement decisions I wonder if they wouldn't have held back or endorsed Coburn.

I wonder if Nickles will endorse . . .
