Need help with Internet Explorer error(.dll file)
fiftymegaton

Posted on 02/29/2004 7:17:48 PM PST by fiftymegaton

Every time I get on the internet and type in the address for freerepublic.com(so far this is the only address where I receive the error) I get an error that says 'IE has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL' and then the window will automatically close. Can anyone tell me why I receive this error, why it only happens with freerepublic, and what I can do about it? I actually got into the site(in order to post this) by typing in the address to my personal page and then linking to the rest of the site. For some reason the site links will work when I right click them and open them in a new window but not when I simply click on them.

I suspect you're running ME. Dude, get a new operating system. XP Pro if you can afford it or have someone that will provide you a copy. As a last resort you can upgrade to the latest version of IE which is 6.0

Okay solution. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs. Remove IE. Reinstall IE from CD or downloaded EXE.

Better solution. Go to http://www.mozilla.org/ and download and install Firefox, the best web browser available today bar none.

And when you go under HELP on your browswer menu, and then ABOUT EXPLORER, does it say you're using version 5.5?

Make sure you have the latest Internet Explorer Service Pack and upgrades using Windows Update. I've already had to remove updates and re download them from MS update site. Used to see this a lot, but it's been awhile.

Can you uninstall IE from ME? I don't think its possible without a host of complications. As for those other suggestions, I say ignore them. You don't need to be installing junk on your computer until you get this fixed.

Yeah, then its a known flaw in Windows ME. No biggie, but a pain nonetheless. You probably have an old machine. You really should get Windows XP Pro.

I'm thinking you've got a very nasty piece of spyware. I spent four hours yesterday trying to solve the same error on my dad's computer and finally traced the problem to a piece of spyware. Try downloading Spywarezapper and seeing what is lurking on your PC. Once I did this the problem went away.
