Springsteen torture at Camp X-Ray
01Mar04
A TERROR suspect freed from Guantanamo Bay has told of cruel and unusual punishment.
Hamed Abderrahman Ahmad, a Spaniard who denies any links with terrorism, said he had to wrap his head in a damp towel to try to muffle loud tapes of Born in the USA.
Mr Ahmad said he was confined to a small cell where the lights were always on and he was forced to listen endlessly to Bruce Springsteen.
"First I spent a month in a cell two metres square that had a roof of sheet iron, with unbearable heat," he said.
"All day they blared patriotic American music. It was Born in the USA. We had to put wet towels on our heads to be able to bear the heat and not hear the music . . .
"Later they put us in even smaller cells."

I went to high school in the NJ suburbs of NYC from '76-'80. People were seriously divided over music (except on the issue of disco - everyone thought that sucked). You know how there are certain general personality types that any class of kids could be divided into - jocks, burn outs, fags/nerds, etc., etc. Well musical tastes were pretty much divided along those same lines. The "cool kids" and burn outs were a combo of rockers and Dead Heads. The jocks were into whatever groups were common on the radio and they loved Springsteen. And then fags/nerds either didn't care at all or like the jocks listened to whatever was on the radio. Oh yeah there were a few punk types around too but they were cool. And a couple of the trumpeters in the school band listened to jazz but didn't talk much about it. For many of us Springsteen was in the same category as Disco - he was literally and passionately hated. He could honestly be considered torture. I never felt truly sorry for prisoners in Guantanamo till now.

The jocks were into whatever groups were common on the radio and they loved Springsteen. Ah, but Springsteen almost never got radio play prior to 1980 (when you were in HS). His first hit was "Hungry Heart" ('80) and his career took off from there (although the quality of his music took a huge nosedive).

I knew that the 1992 (or was it 1996?) election was doomed when the big entertainment at the Republican convention was the Singing Senators doing Barbershop Quartet music.
Bush showed very good taste by having Jimmie Vaughan at the 2000 Republican convention.

Maybe he didn't get air play where you were but he did here. The music wars in HS were serious stuff. Those who liked Springsteen also tended to like Bob Seiger (sp?), and the dislike went the same way - hate one, hated the other.

Yeah, the "music wars" were pretty serious where I went to HS school as well (L.A., '78 - '82). I'm a couple years behind you so disco had already (and thankfully) died, and the punk/new wave scene was the big deal .....especially since many of the bands in that genre made L.A. their home and played the local scene regularly. I never got into most of that music though, except perhaps some Elvis Costello for a while.
I mostly listened to classic rock from the '68 - '74 period. ....and jazz & blues.

Now for a chorus of "You And Me Against The World." And somebody out there must have a photo of Mike Douglas doing "The Men In My Little Girl's Life."

Okay, we'll call that even. And I'll throw in "Please Just Don't Stand There" by Patty Duke and "I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene, at no extra charge.
