The jocks were into whatever groups were common on the radio and they loved Springsteen.

Ah, but Springsteen almost never got radio play prior to 1980 (when you were in HS). His first hit was "Hungry Heart" ('80) and his career took off from there (although the quality of his music took a huge nosedive).

Maybe he didn't get air play where you were but he did here. The music wars in HS were serious stuff. Those who liked Springsteen also tended to like Bob Seiger (sp?), and the dislike went the same way - hate one, hated the other.

That's true nationally, but Bruce was a New Jersey icon before then, with lots of NYC radio airplay.
