Yeah, the "music wars" were pretty serious where I went to HS school as well (L.A., '78 - '82). I'm a couple years behind you so disco had already (and thankfully) died, and the punk/new wave scene was the big deal .....especially since many of the bands in that genre made L.A. their home and played the local scene regularly. I never got into most of that music though, except perhaps some Elvis Costello for a while.

I mostly listened to classic rock from the '68 - '74 period. ....and jazz & blues.

Not counting the bubble gum/kiddie pop music of the time the '60s had some great music which lasted into the early '70s then something went wrong. The bands that came out in the mid -late 70s so annoyed my ears that I found I couldn't go more than 3 or 4 songs per radio station before I was forced to roll the dial. Then in the 80s screechy heavy metal came on strong - silly looking, spandex wearing, big hair bands with screaming replacing singing and obnoxious bashing replacing music so I switched to jazz, blues and classical when I wasn't listening to the old R&R on record or tape. I hated to give up R&R but one can't listen to the same old records every day all your life. So in a way I'm grateful to Springsteen and the other "artists" of the period for forcing me to seriously explore other genre's that I had only dabbled in before though I still can't forgive them for the "muzak" they made.
