Not counting the bubble gum/kiddie pop music of the time the '60s had some great music which lasted into the early '70s then something went wrong. The bands that came out in the mid -late 70s so annoyed my ears that I found I couldn't go more than 3 or 4 songs per radio station before I was forced to roll the dial. Then in the 80s screechy heavy metal came on strong - silly looking, spandex wearing, big hair bands with screaming replacing singing and obnoxious bashing replacing music so I switched to jazz, blues and classical when I wasn't listening to the old R&R on record or tape. I hated to give up R&R but one can't listen to the same old records every day all your life. So in a way I'm grateful to Springsteen and the other "artists" of the period for forcing me to seriously explore other genre's that I had only dabbled in before though I still can't forgive them for the "muzak" they made.
...then something went wrong. Concept albums, rock operas, Woodstock, country-rock (as opposed to hillbilly influenced rock known as rockabilly). Take your pick.
"Adults" in the 1970s listed to fern bar songwriters like Carly Simon, Paul Simon, James Taylor, et al. They danced to superficial Disco and did massive amounts of cocaine.
Songwriters got "serious" and believed their own press sheets. Rock and roll wasn't fun anymore.
Back to basics is where it always is.
Good rock and roll is still made but you are just about on your own in this world to find it.
