Riding "The Passion" Coattails: ABC's "Judas" (my title)

RADNOR, Pa. (AP) - The task given to Johnathon Schaech wasn't the easiest: Present a well-balanced portrayal of one of the most demonized figures in religion.
Although Schaech said his lead role in the upcoming ABC biopic "Judas" has been a challenge, it has also taught him a thing or two.
"A lot of religious individuals won't accept him as anything more than just a betrayer of Christ," Schaech told TV Guide. "When you give him a heart and say he's misunderstood, they don't want to hear that."
The television movie, scheduled to air March 8, tells the story of betrayal from Judas' point of view.
"We were trying to construct a psychological profile so you could see why he was doing what he was doing," said the Rev. Frank Desiderio, a Catholic priest who was the film's executive producer. "I hope it reveals Judas' humanity."
The movie should also benefit from being televised shortly after the release of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" in theaters.
"They're riding its coattails," Schaech said.

There was not one good thing about Judas He was an apostle, chosen by Jesus, Himself.
Of course, you are right, he then chose Satan over Christ.
But your assertion there was not one good thing implies "never".

Actually I was amazed that during Diane Sawyer's interview with Mel, they were showing ads for this Judas movie. I think they have a niche market - Democrats!

TV Guide has an article about this movie. The movie is produced and written by Oz's Tom Fontana, and has been in the can since 2001. According to TV Guide, it "creates a fundamentally sympathetic portrait of Judas by telling the story from his point of view."

"So produce fire or something!" -- Judas when he finds that Jesus can do miracles.
The movie was in production in 2000 when the producer died, also a consultant for the animated series The Devil, God, and Bob.
The preview seems to insinuate there was more to Jesus and Judas' kiss than pointing him out. We'll learn something we've never known before -- wow the minds at ABC.
I found a series of images of course the first looks sexual.
Apparently Judas haggled for 50 silver instead of 30.
There is no ressurection, just crucifixion.
Jesus puts on the crown of thorn himself I think from the preview. It looked so lame compared to Mel's movie.
Judas' father takes part in mass crucifixions.
Just some of the things to look forward to.

I'm all excited in anticipation of the upcoming ABC biopic on the Romans scourgers. Hollyweird can make a whole series of these biopics.

Jesus himself. He had a destiny and every action he took (or didn't take) was leading him to that fate. He had plenty of opportunity to escape, his friends pleaded for him to leave. He knew what his actions would result in. Blame the victim syndrome. She was just asking to be raped, I tell ya!

I'm only half kidding. The question is, "Will you get paid when they steal this idea from you?"

And, what is their first choice: a sympathetic portrayal of the man who betrayed Christ.I'm so surprised.

The notion that without Judas there'd have been no betrayal, crucifixion, resurrection, etc. has a bit of truth in it. It does not elevate him, it just means that he becomes the "character", as it were, through which it is done. In other words, if not him, it would have been done otherwise.

I agree that it's an interesting POV to consider, but I agree with Paul Atreides, it's so typical that ABC decided to do Judas.
To be honest, Peter -- or especially Paul -- makes for a better story.

A movie about Judas, huh?
Does it show him with an intern?

Next up.
How Satan is misunderstood and how God is bad for not giving him a second chance.
Hollyweird??? You have that right.
But then, they ARE backing a modern day Benedict Arnold for President. What do we expect?

Already been done... Jesus Christ Superstar, the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, paints a sympathetic but unforgiving picture of Judas. In the play (and movie), Judas believes in Jesus as a leader, but does not believe in Jesus' divinity. Judas' thinking is more like a revolutionary -- he thinks it's about getting rid of Rome -- and all of the "God" talk bothers him to the point he betrays Jesus in order to save the "movement", so to speak. But it is still a betrayal.

Actually, another apostle was also named Judas -- Judas Thaddeus, though we know him as St. Jude.
