Actually I was amazed that during Diane Sawyer's interview with Mel, they were showing ads for this Judas movie. I think they have a niche market - Democrats!

TV Guide has an article about this movie. The movie is produced and written by Oz's Tom Fontana, and has been in the can since 2001. According to TV Guide, it "creates a fundamentally sympathetic portrait of Judas by telling the story from his point of view."

The movie was in production in 2000 when the producer died, also a consultant for the animated series The Devil, God, and Bob.

The preview seems to insinuate there was more to Jesus and Judas' kiss than pointing him out. We'll learn something we've never known before -- wow the minds at ABC.

I found a series of images of course the first looks sexual.

Apparently Judas haggled for 50 silver instead of 30.

There is no ressurection, just crucifixion.

Jesus puts on the crown of thorn himself I think from the preview. It looked so lame compared to Mel's movie.

Judas' father takes part in mass crucifixions.

Jesus himself. He had a destiny and every action he took (or didn't take) was leading him to that fate. He had plenty of opportunity to escape, his friends pleaded for him to leave. He knew what his actions would result in.

The notion that without Judas there'd have been no betrayal, crucifixion, resurrection, etc. has a bit of truth in it. It does not elevate him, it just means that he becomes the "character", as it were, through which it is done. In other words, if not him, it would have been done otherwise.

I agree that it's an interesting POV to consider, but I agree with Paul Atreides, it's so typical that ABC decided to do Judas.

To be honest, Peter -- or especially Paul -- makes for a better story.

Already been done... Jesus Christ Superstar, the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, paints a sympathetic but unforgiving picture of Judas. In the play (and movie), Judas believes in Jesus as a leader, but does not believe in Jesus' divinity. Judas' thinking is more like a revolutionary -- he thinks it's about getting rid of Rome -- and all of the "God" talk bothers him to the point he betrays Jesus in order to save the "movement", so to speak. But it is still a betrayal.

Actually, another apostle was also named Judas -- Judas Thaddeus, though we know him as St. Jude.
