A major no-show at tonight's Academy Awards in Hollywood will be Mel Gibson.

The Executive Producer of the program, Joe Roth asked the filmmaker of PASSION OF THE CHRIST to present an award, knowing it would create unforgettable sparks.

The LA TIMES reports that Gibson let the offer expire because, Roth says, he was afraid of being booed.

His representatives said Gibson was too busy to attend because it was the movie's opening weekend.

I would have loved to see those who DO support Mel stand up like the crowd at the Tonight Show did.

You may just get what you ask for. This is a certain gentleman named Eastwood who wanted Mr Gibson to attend. I believe he might just say something kinda unexpected tonight...you never can tell at these things...lol

Mel won't attend because he has proved these people to be irrelevant. He produced this movie without their help and support, why should he help their ratings?

I have a feeling that, whatever the reason Gibson didn't accept the offer, it wasn't because he was afraid of being booed.

That is very perceptive. Gibson understands that Hollywood knows his appearance at the Oscars would boost their ratings. Maybe some other time. Just not this time.

I confess I've never seen it. We have the DVD, though; in honor of Mel's leap of faith with Passion I shall dust it off and watch it.

Yeah, true, it's not worth it for Gibson. But as a conservative, I would've liked to see Hollywood show itself to be what they are.

It would not surprise me an actor, say Sean Penn, comes out in support of Gibson's right to "artistic expression". There are over $100 million reasons for them to make a statement like this, and attempt to endear themselves to what they now know to be a huge market. It would be a transparent, self-serving, hypocritical thing to do, which is why I suspect someone will do it.

As for me, I'll miss it since I'll be at the movies watching Mel's film. I can’t boycott the Oscars, because you can’t boycott something you never watch anyway.

Gibson might be guilty of many things, but "afraid" is not one of them. Actually the booing would have given a boost to Gibson and his movie. Already many people, including those who are no big fans of Gibson, are outraged at the false attacks on him.

Roth comes across only as a liar.
