NO MEL GIBSON AT OSCARS

Sun Feb 29 2004 13:01:38 ET

A major no-show at tonight's Academy Awards in Hollywood will be Mel Gibson.

The Executive Producer of the program, Joe Roth asked the filmmaker of PASSION OF THE CHRIST to present an award, knowing it would create unforgettable sparks.

The LA TIMES reports that Gibson let the offer expire because, Roth says, he was afraid of being booed.

His representatives said Gibson was too busy to attend because it was the movie's opening weekend.

America has responded to Gibson's film quite dramatically. The Oscar's is small change. It's for the "little people" now.

"The LA TIMES reports that Gibson let the offer expire because, Roth says, he was afraid of being booed." THIS crowd wouldn't boo, they would shriek: "GIVE US BARABBAS!"

You're ,of course, assuming that the Hollywood intelligentsia would know who Barabbas was.

Oh? I did not know this. Well, I'm not watching it anyway. I'm pretty sure there's some varisty darts on ESPN or something that I can watch instead.

"Perhaps. Maybe he just didn't care to allow himself to be used"

I'm sure he chose not to have to deal with the phonies who would be nice to his face and then tear him up behind his back. He's well aware of how two-faced Hollywood is and wants none of it. I'm glad he's not going too.

In matters of intelligence in Hollywood, you can't assume anything.

Got that right girlfriend!

I also heard it on A&E this morning. They were interviewing some of the actors and asking them if they thought it would get political.

Didn't you get the memo?

This year the libbies are going to scream "GIVE US BARBARELLA!" and Hanoi Jane will appear as an awards presenter wearing a Kerry button!

Ugh. I'm going to stop now.

Rumors around the 'net are that ABC will allow Bush and Passion bashing run rampant without any time limit, and that this is Hollywood's battle cry for gay marriage and try to connect support for Passion is anti-gay marriage.

I rarely watch O'Reilly anymore, but during the past week I landed on him for a minute and forget who the guest was, but he opined there would be bashing like you say. (I remember--it was Ted Casablanca, a gossip columnist) and Ted said "Well, there wasn't any at the Golden Globes", (They were talking more about Bush bashing than the other tie-ins you surmise are possible), and O'Reilly pointed out that he thought that was because the stars knew the Oscars were still coming and wouldn't risk being outspoken at the Globes and affect the Academy Award perception, but tonight they'd feel free to let it all hang out.

We shall see, but it seemed to have a ring of insight and Casablanca thought it possible, too.

Wonder when the deadline was. 2 months ago, 6 months ago, yesterday? The climate has changed in the last 5 days, that's for sure.

I think this is good news! I think the public (who won't watch it but will hear of the bashing from the elite media outlets) needs to have a very clear picture of just how out of touch the kingpins of cultural decay really are.

Bash away fools!

Gibson, fearless in making his movie, would now fear boos from the Godless?

Totally agree. Gibson is the only person I know who kicked Jet Li's behind (LOL)

Seriously, Gibson doesn't need Hollywood anymore. He can bankroll and produce his own indie movies.

"Gibson needs the acadamy like a dog needs fleas."

Next year's awards show will be more interesting to watch. It has already been declared by Roger Ebert and others that Mel Gibson and his movie would never earn an academy award. I'm wondering if he and his film will even be nominated. I would hope there would be a terrific backlash from the public if the academy totally overlooked the movie. Time will tell.

Not only the stress he's going through now, but imagine making that movie. Everybody who has seen the movie (except liberal jackasses)is awestruck.

That's ok. I think Mel is going to do just fine. In fact, because of the success of this film, he will be able to do whatever projects interest him, commercial value or not.

After reading about this movie, I thought someone like Mel Gibson might be interested in distributing it to a large audience.
