NO MEL GIBSON AT OSCARS

Sun Feb 29 2004 13:01:38 ET

A major no-show at tonight's Academy Awards in Hollywood will be Mel Gibson.

The Executive Producer of the program, Joe Roth asked the filmmaker of PASSION OF THE CHRIST to present an award, knowing it would create unforgettable sparks.

The LA TIMES reports that Gibson let the offer expire because, Roth says, he was afraid of being booed.

His representatives said Gibson was too busy to attend because it was the movie's opening weekend.

Bless him, Mel Gibson is no doubt considering how his very public activities will affect the presentation of the Christian message to the world.

Maybe he thinks Hollywood is not worthy of making the presentation, or not yet ready. Maybe he doesn't want to create confusion between the message of the Bible and (if there is one) the message of Hollywood. Maybe he doesn't want to cause embarrassment to Hollywood. Whatever the dissection of motive, I think that Mel Gibson's decision is driven in part by the Holy Spirit. And that is a force that I trust my eternity with.

I'm hoping Bill Murray gets the Oscar tonight instead of Sean Penn!

Peter Jackson's Extended Version DVD's of "Fellowship" and "Two Towers" have been very juicy when it comes to bonus material. I would dearly love to see him include ALL the footage of any Oscars he, the cast and crew win on the "Return of the King" set!

I have two reasons for Oscar watching, a friend's short is nominated and BILL MURRAY HAS TO WIN!! (I loved "Lost...) (Oh, and I hope Jackson and LOTR win.)

Then I'm going to the 10pm showing of The Passion.

;^)

Don't forget that George C. Scott refused to accept his Academy Award for Best Actor for his outstanding performance in Patton, stating that the Awards were "professionally demeaning". After all the flak Hollywood has given him over the past few weeks, Gibson has realized that Scott had a point and is following his example.

Any group that can cheer and applaud an idiot like Michael (Moby Dick) Moore when he gets up on stage and demeans and ridicules the US military while they are fighting and dying to liberate an oppressed people has forever lost my respect.

"Real men have no reason to attend functions put on by bedwetters, effeminate men and dykes."

Sometimes, something just hits the spot. Ya know what I mean? Like a good beer, a good cigar, or a good meal. Well your post was like that.

I rarely watch O'Reilly anymore, but during the past week I landed on him for a minute and forget who the guest was, but he opined there would be bashing like you say. (I remember--it was Ted Casablanca, a gossip columnist) and Ted said "Well, there wasn't any at the Golden Globes",

Actually, Ted is wrong. A visibly drunken Glenn Close staggered around saying something about "And I for one don't think that this country's most important problems are kids using steroids and who should be allowed to marry" or some other kind of blathering nonsense. She was three sheets to the wind.

I think you are right on the money with this. Here's one more pretend quote:

Another good FReeper point. I admire Gibson, the left admires Moore. Moore will attend the Oscars, Gibson won't.

Liberty Valance says Braveheart is on USA Network tonight! Maybe I'll start a live thread for it. :-)

I was just thinking about just that! Please do, I'd be there posting away.

#85..Braveheart..is timeless and seamless.
It's just an almost perfect movie....
..the scenery, the music, acting, everything!!...simply flows!

I knew then that Mel was outstanding!!
The fact that he acted AND directed was amazing!

At mass this morning, our priest made comments about the movie, "The Passion." He cautioned us ignorant, unwashed, potential Jew haters in the pews to be aware that the Church does not hold the Jewish people to blame for Christ's death. Gee, I am so enlightened now.

Then, after clarifying that "I've never been a fan of Mel Gibson," he went on to say that the movie is "unnecessarily" violent and we would need to be cautious about allowing our children to see it.

It's nice to know that our priest leads his flock based on what he reads in the op ed pages of the New York Times and The Nation.

Give me a break!!
