For the GOP: Rauschenberger (Chicago Tribune Endorsement)
The Chicago Tribune ^ | 2-29-2004 | Editorial Staff

The campaign for the U.S. Senate has been dominated by big-spenders, at least if you use the TV ads and the polls as a guide.

For those who are mesmerized by fat campaign bank accounts, it should be remembered that just two years ago in a Republican primary for the U.S. Senate, little-known and lightly funded Jim Durkin defeated two opponents who vastly outspent him.

Can that happen again?

If it does, Republican Party voters will have cast aside the television blitz to find the one candidate who has a long and unmatched public record of independence and effectiveness. That is state Sen. Steven Rauschenberger, who is endorsed today by the Tribune.

... snip ...

... we have watched him for 11 years since he came to the Illinois Senate, and it has been an absolutely exceptional performance.

... snip ...

In this primary field Rauschenberger brings by far the greatest experience and the greatest depth of thought on national issues. He would deliver the kind of creative leadership and integrity that Illinois has enjoyed from U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde, who has endorsed Rauschenberger.

... snip...

Voters, though, don't have to guess about Steve Rauschenberger. He has served them with unquestioned integrity and intelligence for more than a decade. He has done the job, and he has earned their support on March 16.

Id like to but I probably can't get there tomorrow night. This is shaping up to be a hectic week. In fact, all of March is getting that way.

SurveyUSA

Survey USA polls are totally automated and have been known to accept input from sufficiently trained housepets.

Nevertheless it's nice to see that Obie has peaked and now dropping rapidly. McKenna will be well into single digits by this week's end.

Ryan is no where near 46%. A far more reliable and recent Tribune poll had him at 30. Hell, he drew 28 in strawpoll at Chicago Conservative Conference last spring -- well before he ever spent his first TV dollar -- so he's really not moved but a whit. Aspersions and innuendo, whether true or not, will hurt him badly over next two weeks.

Voting day is pretty cool for me - I let the boss know I'll be late because I'm voting, wake up at my usual time, and, instead of going to work, hit Starbucks before the polls open. So I vote and arrive at work with a major caffeine buzz.

Survey USA polls are totally automated and have been known to accept input from sufficiently trained housepets.

They are typically very accurate. You should check out their record some time. Besides, I wanted to give one polling organization to show the trend.

Rasmussen and the Institute for Metropolitan Affairs confirm the SurveyUSA results.

Rasmussen - Feb 21-ish
Ryan 41, Oberweis 17, McKenna 11, Rauschy 4
That was between SUSA polls showing 35% and 46% for Ryan, consistent with the upward trend.
The Institute for M.A. had a higher % of undecided, but the relatives percents are roughly in line:
36-14-8-4
Was taken about the same time as the Rasmussen poll.

Seems to me that the Trib polls are crap.

However, if you prefer to use the Tribune polls . . .

#1, Taken Jan. 6-11, #2 Taken Feb. 11-17

JACKRyan 12 - 30
Oberweis 16 - 12
AMcKenna 5 - 8
Rauschen 5 - 4
Undecide 57 - 43

. . . then it appears Rauschenberger is losing support. However, considering that the first Trib poll showing Ryan 12, Oberweis 16 was taken right before SurveyUSA showed Ryan 29, Oberweis 17 -- well, I know which one was borne out by later polling. Seems to me they leave too many people in undecided, when many of them are leaning to a certain candidate.

Wow! A former Texas dweller! Thanks for letting me know! WRT to Rauschy, he sounds great to me. I'll be talking about him in my neck of the woods.

Maybe we should take a poll on which poll is most accurate.

Or perhaps, since today is Pulaski Day, we we should take a poll on which poll is more Polish!

One thing though is clear, the can't measure a grassroots groundswell 'til after the applecart's been upset.

We'll blind side 'em on the 16th!

Is this the Same Rauschenberger who voted for the instate tuition for illegals? I'm no Oberweis, but let the facts speak for themselves

Is this the Same Rauschenberger who voted for the instate tuition for illegals?

And the same one who voted against Driver's Licenses for illegals? I mentioned early on I don't agree with every vote he's cast. But he far exceeds the Ronald Reagan/Morton Blackwell definition of 80% agreement being considered a "friendly".

Remember, whatever the others may tell you, they have absolutely no record at all on any of the issues. To me, sometimes a known is better than an unknown, so long as I know.

You may not agree with every vote Steve has cast — I know I don't — but at least you know where he stands.

I know where he stands too. The Tribune loves him because he's a go along big government politicion. Bascially he's a Democrat.

Obviously you are ill informed. Rauschy is routinely referred to as second most conservative member of the Illinois Senate, behind Chris Lauzen, who is also endorsing Rauschy.

I s'pose now you'll claim that Lauzen is basically a Democrat as well. Get some extra coffee and double check dosages on all meds.

Referred to by whom? Liberals?

Having trouble thinking for yourself and comimg to your own conclusions?

Kerry is the second most conservative Senator from Mass. after Kennedy.

Flame war? Ok, just remember who started the personal BS.

No flame intended pal, when I flame I FLAME!!

I think quite well for myself thank you, and remember quite well the "Fab Five Conservatives" elected to Illinois Senate in '92 -- Fitzgerald, O'Malley, Lauzen, Syverson, and, yes, RAUSCHENBERGER!

Are you going to characterize all of them as basically democrats. If you are, that's fine, it's your privilege. But it would define you as being hopelessly beyond the point of wasting the wear and tear on my keyboard.

Strawman. You really need to try harder.

But it would define you as being hopelessly beyond the point of wasting the wear and tear on my keyboard.

Translation,,,"I've been exposed as a moron and now I'm getting the hell out of here".

If only you lived by the virtues extolled on your profile page ... flame away non-pal, this is the last response you'll get from me.
