Tanker explodes off coast off Virginia
CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. (AP) A tanker carrying industrial ethanol exploded and sank about 50 miles off the Virginia coast Saturday night, the Coast Guard said. At least two of the 27 crew members aboard were killed, and rescue crews were still searching for 19 others.
Six crew members were taken to hospitals in Maryland and Virginia, said Petty Officer Stacey Pardini of the Coast Guard Atlantic area in Portsmouth. The extent of their injuries was not immediately available.
The 570-foot tanker called in a mayday just after 6 p.m., saying there had been an explosion on board, Pardini said.
Three helicopters, three Coast Guard boats and a C-130 plane from Elizabeth City, N.C., were searching for other survivors.

Preliminary reports stating that a boiler exploded.

No, I'm not geting my Al Queda shorts in a knot over this. All it would take is a crewman having Van de Kamp's pork and beans for dinner, lighting an after-dinner smoke, and/or walking into a pocket of ethanol fumes. *KABOOM*

It sounds like 6 people may have survived but apparently AP doesn't have a calculator. Let us hope for more survivors,

what port did it leave from? Not sure...but if it exploded off of Virginia, then it probably left a U.S. port.

I don't mean to sound silly here, but just who would haul ethanol? I mean I don't think there is any transportation costs that could justify ethanol transporting over seagoing vessels.
Corn, sugar cane, rye, potatoes, rice, wheat, and any starch could be more economically produced locally.
A zero on the smell test meter. What was it really?

well, blowing it up at sea doesn't make any sense for the terrorists, if they could have blown it at either of those two ports, it would have had a very big impact.
To: blackdog
good point. and what is the source of ethanol in NY that it should be loaded on a ship going to houston?
To: ServesURight
According to local Channel 8 in Northern Virginia the vessel is registered in Singapore and was enroute from NY to Houston. Nineteen missing.
To: Ranxerox
"........headed to Houston."
Thanks for answering my question before I asked it. Are you psychic or something? heh
