Is it true the California DMV requires some kind of court document to change a name?

In California one may change names at will, and state agencies will recognize it. A court-ordered name-change change is for convenience, but not necessary.

The Federal government will or did automatically accept the name on record with one's state of residence, with very few exceptions (passport applications are an exception, I think).

If you are a lawyer and believe this isn't correct, please step in.

So, one ought to be able to do -- or were able to do -- the following in California: decide to change a name, get a driver's license under the new name (making clear the fact of a name change on the DMV application), apply for a revised Social Security card with the new name and the old number, and update bank accounts to use the new name.

This is not to sanction gay marriage: gay marriage is a fraud and a sham, intended to lure vulnerable youth into believing that homosexuality is not a quasi-cult and not a social abnormality. It is both of those things.

Didn't Clinton sign the "Defense of Marriage Act" in 1996 (designed to establish a legal definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman)?

I'm guessing it came from Bush.

Naw, I raised this issue in a previous thread! Pres must be scanning FR. (Yeah, right.) They altered the marriage documents, so they are not legally binding as they are not the officially sanctioned State documents. What's more, it's not likely City of SF would use different documents for heterosexual couples because they wouldn't want to "discriminate" against gays by using a separate set of documents. So if you were clueless about what was going on with the gay marriages and you had a heterosexual marriage in SF after obtaining a marriage license during the last week, you may find out later on that you were never legally married. Lawsuits a plenty may happen down the road!

Seriously, why hasn't he been charged? Is there a law I'm not aware of that prevents his arrest?

We don't need to amend our Constitution to solve this problem. We need to amend the constitution of the courts, specifically with regard to the judges whose orders exceed their authority.

Yes he did. It was a bandaid measure. It was couple with Hawaii adopting a constitutional amendment which moved the whole homosexuals to vermont. THey botched it there when the legislature out manuvered them with civil unions which were then rejected in CT, GA, and TX. This still left the Fed DMA intact only because it was UNCHALLENGED.

Now we zoom ahead to mass. and their ruling. DMA will fall based on either equal protection or FFC. This also threatens the two states that have prohibitions of homosexuals aadopting children, the 11th's recent opinion, and preferences for hetorsexual parent preferences in states which allow a homosexual to adopt.

a bit long but yes clinton did sign the DMA but as a lawyer he KNEW it would not stand a prolonged challenge.

"Ninth Circus Court of Schlemeels" LOL.

Absolutely fabulous! I'll be LOL for a week on that one!

I purpose that this be adopted as the official FR name for that undistinguished body.

"Ninth Circus Court of Schlemeels" is a Michael Savage quote. I listen to him over the Internet a lot (usually some stupid hockey or basketball game preempts his radio show). The guy is really, really funny and insightful.

This is going to get interesting when the IRS does not accept gay marriages on income tax forms.

I can only get Savage at our lake cabin in Wisconsin (we live in the Twin Cities). I agree, he's as stingingly funny as it gets. I plan to get satellite radio soon so that my choices can be expanded. None the less, Savage is my fishing buddy in the early am, in the summer. He and Rush have a "fish magnet voice". I'm serious, the fishing always gets better when I have either of them on.

I just haven't heard him use that term yet. Thanks for the info, I'll listen for it come summer, or when I get satellite radio, whichever comes first.
