In its second full day in theaters, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ held up remarkably well and grossed $14,781,316, dropping 44% from its opening day haul of $26,556,573. Take out the estimated $3M in preview grosses that were added to Wednesday's figure, and the decline stands at a surprisingly mild 37%. By comparison, Wednesday-to-Thursday drops for other recent high-profile event films bowing on Wednesdays include 51% for The Return of the King, 57% for Star Wars Episode I, 47% for The Two Towers, and 55% for The Matrix Revolutions.

To date, Passion has collected a stunning $41.3M going into the Friday-to-Sunday weekend period with tremendous strength. That puts it in the same company as The Phantom Menace, which launched with a Wednesday-Thursday take of $40.9M leading to a five-day bow of $105.7M. Also performing in similar fashion was The Two Towers which took in $40M in its first two days capturing $102M over its five-day opening frame. At its current pace, the Jesus tale may also reach the neighborhood of $100M over its Wednesday-to-Sunday debut frame.

The lefties in Hollyweird aren't going to know what to do after this weekend.

I expect this movie to break some records.

Happy Oscars everyone! The Passion is running roughshod over most major Hollywood productions.

So much for the Hollywood mindset that it was going to be a non-movie.

The DVD and video sales are going to be even more phenomenal, I think.

Look for a strong weekend (since most folks aren't sci-fi geeks who can skip school), and an absolutely huge Sunday.

I think it will go over a billion when the DVD and VHS sales come in. It will be something that every church has a copy of and most members. It will be shown every year around this time.

I put a review here.

And all of this with no formal advertising, and nothing but scorn from the secular media critics.

When Jesus talks, people listen.

If Mel does the DVD with an extra half hour of footage it will sell millions of copies.

However they will be very well aware that a significant chunk of the American public doesn't give a rip what they say or think, at the very least.

That doesn't surprise you or I, but I'm sure will come as a shock to them.

I don't think he needs any extra footage. Its just one of those movies you want around.

The Hollywood establishment have now been thoroughly discredited as out-of-touch seond-rate pimps.

The greatest attack on America has come from Hollywood over the last 30 years.

The tables may finally be turning.

Mel's $25 million investment in his film is gonna have a better return than Hillary's 'investment' in cattle futures....

my niece plays basketball for a Jewish Community Center team. Yesterday they played the Methodists and right before the tipoff an 11 year old girl said to my niece in an angry and audible voice, "You killed my Savior!" NICE!

I agree, I can't wait to get this one on DVD. MY wife and I very rarely go to theaters, only been twice in the past year. I do however buy 2 to 3 DVD's a month.

Something else to consider: this movie is likely to be a must-see for DECADES!!

Sure, Spiderman was a success -- but how much money will it earn in, say, 2006? in 2016? Probably not bucketloads. But "The Passion"? People are going to be buying the DVD for a looooooong time. And Churches will arrange showings -- probably annually --- for a looooooooooong time.

Give it a bit of time and this little movie is going to be the most successful film in history. Bar none. Let the Hollywood people chew on that.
